In the era of COVID-19, epidemic levels of youth vaping come with an elevated cause for concern. New research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found teens and young adults who vaped were as much as seven times more likely to contract COVID-19. Their research also suggests an elevated concern for public health with vapor plumes from a smoker infected with COVID-19 being easily inhaled by those in proximity and potentially making them sick.
Dr. Stephen Cobb, a physician executive with Centura Health and family medicine expert says, "Nicotine can impair immunity, making infections more likely, and could lead to a worse case of COVID-19.”
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also connected vaping to a lung injury called EVALI (E-cigarette or Vaping Use-Associated Lung Injury.)
Dr. Cobb adds, “The novel coronavirus attacks the lungs, if those deep pockets and tissue are already damaged, recovery from a COVID-19 infection becomes much harder.”

Here's an update on how he's feeling as well as some notes about the differences between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines being administered to our caregivers across Colorado and western Kansas.
We share your excitement about the expanding number of Coloradans eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, including the essential workers and residents 70 and older identified in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s updated Phase 1B. Please know we are working hard with our state and local public health partners to safely and quickly distribute the vaccine. When we have a vaccine available for you, Centura Health will contact you through your MyCenturaHealth account with specific instructions on how to make an appointment. School nurses receive COVID-19 vaccine as distribution widens
More than 13,000 Centura Health associates have now received their first COVID-19 vaccinations, and we recently invited more than 9,000 community partners to receive the vaccine in our hospitals, with many more to come in the weeks ahead. Here, OB nurse Robin Johnson receives her first shot at Parker Adventist Hospital. "I'm proud to say I received the Pfizer vaccine the first day it was offered," Robin says. With each dose of vaccine administered, we move closer to an end to this devastating pandemic.
While initial studies indicate the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are approximately 95% effective at preventing recipients from getting sick with COVID-19, it is not yet clear whether those who have been vaccinated can still be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus. For this reason, we strongly recommend everyone – including people who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine – continue to practice safe behaviors such as wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, and staying home when sick.

"Here's to Dad," Centura Health anesthesiologist Dr. Gregory Fauteux said this week as he received his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Fauteux knows the devastation COVID-19 can cause; the virus took his father's life November 22. "One of the true tragedies is that there are over 350,000 people just like him - someone's father, someone's brother, someone's mother, someone's daughter, and we just need to take it seriously."
We're working day and night to get the vaccine to as many of you as possible and as quickly as possible in accordance with state guidelines for vaccine distribution. While this process plays out, it's essential that all of us continue to do the things we know stop the spread of this deadly virus: wear a face mask, social distance, practice good hand hygiene, and stay home when sick.

Emmanuel Rusaka is a problem solver by nature. He works as an IT Service Analyst for Centura Health, where he helps our associates who are having computer trouble. Therapy dogs are a familiar sight in our hospitals, given their ability to reduce stress, promote healing and provide comfort to patients and caregivers alike. Less familiar but equally therapeutic - miniature horses! Sherlock and Watson recently visited our associates at St. Anthony North Health Campus thanks to their owner, Becky Ballard, who wanted to show support for our caregivers who have proven so resilient throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. It took a few special precautions to make the visit a success, and it was well worth the effort.

Emmanuel Rusaka is a problem solver by nature. He works as an IT Service Analyst for Centura Health, where he helps our associates who are having computer trouble. Recently, he decided to help solve a different kind of problem after hearing those he loves express doubt and fear about COVID-19 vaccines.

Unsung heroes share stories from front lines of COVID-19 pandemic
Getting a COVID-19 vaccine doesn't mean we can immediately return to pre-pandemic behaviors. In fact, it remains critical that we all continue to follow safety protocols such as mask-wearing, hand-washing and social distancing. Our Dr. Andrew French explains why.
We're committed to ensuring everyone in our communities -- regardless of race, color or ability to pay -- has access to COVID-19 vaccinations as well as reliable information and education about the vaccine. To raise awareness about the vaccine in Spanish-speaking communities, we're holding vaccination clinics for promotoras. In Latinx communities, promotoras are community members who receive specialized training to provide health education to their fellow residents.
The first promotoras vaccination clinic, held this past week at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, is just part of our ongoing effort to address longstanding inequities in vaccination rates in communities of color.

As mesmerizing as it is to watch this time-lapse of our mass vaccination clinic in Colorado Springs, we're more in awe of the dozens of caregivers, volunteers, firefighters, EMTs, police officers and others who came out Saturday to help more than 2,300 people get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. We're looking forward to repeating the process this Saturday for all those whose appointments were rescheduled because of Sunday's miserable weather conditions.
Johnny Cashmore needed a kidney transplant, and his wife Jessica was willing to donate one of hers. When she wasn't a match, they did the next best thing -- participated in a paired exchange in which Jessica donated her kidney to someone on the list for whom she was a match. This living donation chain is still going, with seven people having received kidneys from it.
Johnny's procedure was performed at Centura Transplant at Porter Adventist Hospital. Dr. Alex Wiseman, executive director of kidney transplant at Centura Transplant, says paired exchanges such as the one that benefitted the Cashmore family can significantly decrease the wait time for a needed transplant. "Anytime that you can see something that seems to be not a possibility, turn into a possibility, it just is truly rewarding," Dr. Wiseman says.

Aurora couple will celebrate Valentine’s Day after a paired exchange kidney donation
This Valentine's Day is a little sweeter knowing 2,000 educators across our communities received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Saturday. With a special allotment of vaccine from the state, we held educator vaccination clinics at six Centura hospitals yesterday, including ours. We're administering more educator doses at clinics early this week as well.
We know vaccinating our teachers helps ensure the promise of an eventual return to normalcy, allowing educators to more quickly get back to the work they love -- providing face-to-face instruction for our young learners. ❤️
The safety and well-being of our caregivers and patients are our top priorities. As a result of the deteriorating weather conditions, we've made the decision -- in partnership with COVIDCheck Colorado -- to reschedule Sunday’s drive-through mass vaccine event. Anyone scheduled to receive their vaccine at the Broadmoor World Arena on February 14 will automatically be invited to receive their first dose on Saturday, February 20. Participants will receive a confirmation via email. There is no need to call.
Despite today's cold, we were able to vaccinate more than 2,300 people. Our resilient team of health care workers and volunteers vaccinated more than 268 people per hour. Those receiving the vaccine today included people over 70, educators, existing Centura patients and individuals from underserved and disadvantaged communities.
We're grateful to COVIDCheck Colorado, El Paso County Public Health and all local agencies and organizations that have collaborated to bring this life-saving event to our communities. We look forward to another successful event on Saturday, February 20.

We're humbled and honored to be a major contributor to the new Charles J. Blackwood, MD, Endowed Memorial Scholarship to support Black and other underrepresented medical students at CU Medicine. Dr. Blackwood, a native Coloradan who in 1947 became the first African American to graduate from CU's School of Medicine, was a pioneer in every sense of the word.

What an amazing example of whole person care! When an 80-year-old cancer patient at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center missed two recent appointments, her care team noticed and contacted her out of concern for her wellbeing. They learned the patient's water heater had broken and her home's pipes had burst due to the recent extreme cold, leaving her without running water. Social workers at St. Mary-Corwin and Penrose-St. Francis jumped into action, and with generous help from Rampart Supply and Mike's Plumbing & Heating, the water heater and broken pipes were replaced at no cost to the patient. Our incredible caregivers coordinated everything, including the delivery of the new water heater. We are so grateful for each of them!
