Point of the week: KD6 (Kidney 6) Midterms looming? When you first hear KD6, you might think of the athletic shoes from the “Just Do It!” company, but back when I was studying acupuncture I learned about this point located just below the inner ankle bone (the medial malleolus). The Kidney meridian arises from the bottom of the foot, wraps the inner ankle and travels up the legs and body to the collar bone and diverts to the back of the throat and root of the tongue. Some of my classmates used to complain of a tickly, dry, sore throat that only came at night and was gone by morning—especially if they had been partying or studying late! Others complained of strained ankles from sitting cross-legged or running to class. I make use of this point on a wide array of patients in the clinic, especially in midterm and final season for students, teachers, and mentors, as well as tired parents managing their kids. --Writen by Rowan Lindenfeld Hansen

Autumn is a time to finish up the harvest and prepare for Winter. As such it is a time to separate that which should be kept from that which should be discarded. In the first section of the great classic of Chinese medicine—The Huang Di Nei Jing—the authors discuss Autumn in the following terms: “The qi of heaven becomes tense. The qi of the earth becomes bright. Go to rest early and rise early… Let the mind be peaceful and tranquil, so as to temper (the events of the prior months)”. Wang Bing adds that “If one is not careful in his activities, one accentuates the severity of Autumn... Hence, one establishes a peaceful and tranquil mind to soften the punishments carried out in autumn.” --These quotations are drawn from Paul Unschuld, Herman Tessenow, and Zheng Jinsheng ‘s annotated translation: http://www.biblio.nhat-nam.ru/Huang_Di_Nei_Jing_Su_Wen-Unschuld-Tessenow-1-2.pdf Image by ivabalk from Pixabay
Our wrists can really suffer strain these days juggling working from home, different exercise routines, and general stress. One of the best things to do for them is 15 minutes of self massage and gentle stretching on the wrists and forearms as many days of the week as possible. This can reduce inflammation and pain and activate several acupoints that are good for managing stress. One of the most well known of these is Pericardium 6, located on the palmar aspect of the wrist about 3 fingers up from the wrist crease between the tendons at the center of the arm. Some easy techniques for self massage include gently but firmly squeezing different areas with the opposite hand or gently rubbing the areas with fingers/thumb/knuckles/etc, using oil or lotion if desired. Include all sides/of the wrist and forearm. Image by andreas160578 from Pixabay
