The Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework continues to provide value.
Eleven health care organizations, 6 nonprofit organizations, 2 small businesses, and 1 education organization clearly see the relevance and value of using the Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework to achieve organizational excellence. Those organizations have submitted applications for the 2020 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, with the award process beginning later this month. Advice or Coaching?
We often hear the two placed in juxtaposition – we see them contrasted, because it can be easier to describe what coaches do by describing what they do not do. And often “giving advice” is described as one thing coaches do not do – at least not routinely, and not without permission.
But less often do we think about why coaches shy away from giving advice, and instead adopt a coach approach. In a recent article in MIT Sloan Management Review, “Stop Rushing in With Advice,” Michael Bungay Stanier shares three reasons why much of the advice we give and receive is not useful or effective, and therefore should be avoided:
1. Advice often solves the wrong problem. We tend to pounce on the first problem presented, without understanding the real issue, without identifying root cause.
2. Advice often proposes a mediocre solution, which may not include the full picture or doesn’t make all the connections.
3. Advice shows poor leadership. Wow – that’s an eye-opener! As leaders, aren’t we supposed to give advice, and good advice at that? Here is Stanier’s thought: do we supply an answer that is fast and right? Or do we give someone the room to figure things out? The latter is an act of empowerment, which brings with it confidence, competence, and autonomy.
Stanier concludes that “problem-solving becomes much more interesting and effective when we stay curious and know when to step out of the way.”
Not coincidentally, those are some key attributes of effective coaching:
Staying curious;
Empowerment;
Confidence;
Competence;
Autonomy.
If those approaches to a conversation sound appealing, let’s talk.

Greetings -
I just wanted to reach out briefly in this unprecedented, perhaps a bit surreal time.
No doubt you are receiving many messages and emails and guidelines about how to stay safe and protect the health of those around you, whether at home, at work, at worship, or many other places. And to be clear, my main source of information is the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I would make it your one-stop shop for information as well.
But it’s important to remember that our emotional and mental health is equally important; our minds and spirits need care as well.
I want you to know that, as a leadership and business coach, I am here for you. Whether it’s business issues or personal issues, if you just want to chat for a bit, please feel free to schedule a 30-minute session. Coaching is a judgment-free zone and the agenda is driven by the client. We’ll talk about whatever is on your mind: next steps for your work or business, fears about your work and business, how to keep employees focused, challenges that might be getting in the way of those next steps, or whatever is on your mind.
So for the next two weeks – through the end of March, effectively – I am offering a complimentary “30-Minute Conversation; Open Dialogue.” To schedule this time, go to my Client Portal - https://go.thryv.com/site/PICClientPortal - click on Schedule Now, then find the link that reads “30 Minute Conversation; Open Dialogue.” Find a day and time that works for you, give me a call, and we’ll chat.
Take care, be well and safe. Protect those you care about.
Best regards,
Kurt Schoch

Teamwork: The Ultimate Competitive Advantage
Those words, that Patrick Lencioni wrote in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, remain as true today as they were when he first wrote them.
And in response to that, Wiley Workplace Learning Solutions collaborated with Lencioni to develop The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™, an assessment and training program to help intact teams become more effective and cohesive. If you’re familiar with it, you know it’s power and potential impact. Click here or here for more information on that program.
And now, in response to the need for a broader teamwork solution, Wiley has recently released The Five Behaviors™: Personal Development. This latest program was created to harness the power of The Five Behaviors™ across the entire organization. This new solution teaches individuals to become better teammates by integrating Lencioni’s model at the organizational level. The goal is to completely redefine teamwork and collaboration.
Personal Development is designed specifically to work for individuals; participants do not all need to be part of the same team. Rather, participants can carry the takeaways of this program from one team to the next, enabling a culture of teamwork. Learners at all levels of an organization can benefit from this program and adopt its powerful principles, shape behaviors, and create a common language that empowers people to rewrite what it means to work together.
I would enjoy the opportunity to share more with you about this important solution. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you and being able to take your organization to the next level!

Customer, or Client?
In his book Sales Differentiation, Lee B. Salz points out that “Most business people describe those who buy from them as ‘customers.’” But the definition of “customer” is simply one who buys from another; “one that purchases a commodity or service,” according to Merriam Webster. That’s it; no deeper meaning, just a transaction. But is that really the message we want to convey? (Oh, and while we’re at it . . . . a “vendor” is “one that vends – sells.” Sounds like a machine, doesn’t it? Like, “vending machine.” Ugh – hope those I work with don’t see me as a machine.) Salz goes on to note that lawyers and accountants would never say they have a customer, but rather clients. So back to Merriam Webster, where we find this definition of “client”: “one that is under the protection of another.” Wow! Much more powerful and much more valuable! Are you offering protection to those with whom you have business relationships? If so – and I sure hope so! – you have clients, not customers.
Best wishes as we all protect and care for our clients!
