It is common knowledge that smoking stains your teeth but did you know it also weakens your immune system? This makes it harder for your body to fight off a gum infection and harder for your gums to heal if you have gum damage or pathogenic bacteria. Learn more about how quitting smoking will help give you a healthier smile. https://tobaccofreeflorida.com/how-to-quit-tobacco/ #HealthySmile #NationalGumCareMonth #OralHealth
Did you know even healthy foods can be harmful for your teeth? Strawberries have a high acidic content that will soften your enamel temporarily making it more susceptible to erosion during that time. If you don’t strengthen your enamel, the effects are changes in tooth shape and texture, yellowing, dullness, sensitivity, and translucent edges. Pairing strawberries with foods that have low acid and sugar content, followed by rinsing and flossing after eating can protect your teeth and maximize the benefits of eating this delicious fruit. #OralHealth #HealthySmile

WISDOM WEDNESDAY Fluoride is a mineral in your bones and teeth that can also be found in other natural sources. Fluoride is frequently used in dentistry to strengthen enamel by delaying the loss of minerals in tooth enamel, slow tooth decay, and prevent the growth of destructive oral bacteria. You can find fluoride in some toothpaste, mouth rinse, and even tap water. Because of its role in the prevention of tooth decay, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has proclaimed community water fluoridation as one of ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. #Fluoride #OralHealth #HealthySmile #WisdomWednesday #CDC

A common misconception is that gum disease can be easily spotted before it becomes severe. In fact, gum disease isn’t easy to detect, especially early on. Many seniors don’t know they have periodontal disease because it has been developing slowly over time. That’s why regular dental visits are so important. A professional deep cleaning will remove any buildup of plaque in places you might not be able to reach on your own. Cranberries contain polyphenols, which act as a repellent for bacteria in your mouth. There are properties of cranberries that also actually promote the good bacteria in your mouth. Since cranberries tend to be tart, there are many recipes that add in a lot of sugar to counteract that tartness. When indulging in a food or drink made with cranberries, you will want to use unprocessed cranberries or make sure you drink juice that is 100% juice and does not have any added sugars. #NationalDentalHygieneMonth #FallInLoveWithYourSmile
Hard cheeses and yogurt are great for your teeth! Both are full of protein and calcium, making them great for your enamel. Hard cheeses are good for your mouth because it lowers the pH balance. This, in turn, lowers your risk of tooth decay. The probiotics in yogurt are beneficial to gums by edging out the bad bacteria with good bacteria. Just don’t indulge in the sweet variety, only choose plain. So, enjoy those cheesy soups and autumn fruit parfaits! #FallInLoveWithYourSmile #NationalDentalHygieneMonth
