Pasado's Safe Haven September 12 at 1:00 AM · Help support animals displaced by wildfires! More than a half million acres are burning in Washington State, impacting thousands of animals– especially in central Washington. We have two ways you can directly help these animals: 1. Provide temporary shelter for displaced farmed animals: If you have a farm with space please email cruelty@pasadosafehaven.org. Please include your location and how many and what species of animals you are prepared to take. We will put you in contact with displaced individuals if needed. 2. Support the Hay Bank and Medical Care Fund from Okandogs for displaced animals: The families who were able to evacuate with their animals were only able to bring limited amounts of food with them and many will return to find their hay barns burnt to the ground. Additionally, immediate medical care is being provided for animal burn victims. The Okandogs fund will help cover these costs for those who cannot afford to pay. Okandogs is an organization we have worked with on numerous animal rescues in the past and they are locally coordinating support for these animals. You can donate to them directly at: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/okandogs #WAWildfire (Photos from Okandogs)
We are open today, though we will probably close early. Have a safe howliday! We resume normal hours tomorrow.
Kitten Rescue of Mason County August 19 at 1:48 AM · We can comfortably care for 80 cats and kittens during the kitten season, lasting from March through December. Unfortunately since we are the only shelter in Mason County, we often are faced with making life and death decisions for kittens that desperately need rescue. Day before yesterday, when our population was at 108 a small orange kitten was brought to our shelter in the morning. Severe upper respiratory infection, and fleas had this four week old kitten in grim condition. We placed her in one of our kitchen emergency carriers and under our vet’s advice, treated her with antibiotics, warm snuggly and flea treatment. Sunny Skies took one look at our tiny kitten kibble and ate nonstop for ten minutes. She responded well to the treatments and by day’s end was playing with a small fuzzy mouse. By early afternoon a mother cat and her lovely Siamese mix daughter arrived, found in a box on the porch of a local resident. He was leaving for a few days and could not care for the pretty pair. Evening brought us an adult Torte. A couple had put her in a box and were going to release her in the parking lot of a large busy store. They were laughing about it, when a wonderful young lady heard the cat meowing and offered to take the cat. She brought the kitty to us, as her apartment would not allow her to keep the cat. Imagine the terror that this gentle cat would have experienced running and hiding under cars, too frightened to respond even if anyone cared enough to rescue her? Four more residents, but four of our rescues were adopted yesterday so that helped. Day by day the rescues go on, our energy and finances are stretched to the limit, but somehow we continue saving more lives. Granny Kat, Norma 2017

Kitten Rescue of Mason County July 14 at 1:51 AM · A cute young kitten was abandoned and soon found a home with a group of unrelated people that all lived together. While she was still in the adorable kitten stage, they enjoyed having her live with them. One man promised to take the kitten with him when he moved to Alaska to work. Naturally when he actually moved he did not take the cat with him. The owner of the home did not like cats. She especially did not like cats that were no longer kittens. She put kitty outside, and one of the other roommates fed the cat occasionally. Gracie remembered the days of sleeping by a warm human and getting regular meals. The cat tried to get back in the warm house over and over, but was thrown back outside every time. Gracie did not know what she had done wrong, she only knew that she was cold, hungry and missed being petted and held terribly. An acquaintance of the homeowner spoke with the homeowner often on the phone. Finally when the woman was threatening to shoot the @#$% cat, the lady had to intervene to save Gracie’s life. She called us and arranged to bring the cat to our shelter. Gracie was under a year old, with lovely fur that was matted and uncared for. The pretty cat’s eyes looked sad and lonely for the person who was no longer a part of her life. We quickly trimmed most of the mats out of her fur, and placed her in a warm cage with fresh food and water. She gulped down the food, and then lay down for a rest. She had not been sleeping well in the cold and with the threat of predators always a part of her unwelcome new life. When petted she purrs with delight, so that we know that she will have no problem finding another person to enjoy her company. This time however, she will not be placed outside. She will have a loving home, with a caring family to enjoy the company of this special girl. Sleep well little cat that purrrfect person is just waiting for a new friend like you. Granny Kat, Norma

Kitten Rescue of Mason County November 17 at 3:45 AM · A cat arrived at the shelter recently that had a large section of the skin on his face removed by a fan belt. Kitty had crawled up in a motor to get warm and did not anticipate the motor starting. Since we are open after the hours of many of the rescues, we were there to respond to a phone call. We stabilized the cat until we could get it in to Shelton Veterinarian who we are privileged to have as our vet. We do not have vet techs nor a vet volunteering with us, but we can attempt to keep the injured feline alive until the professionals can assess the damage. A week or two later we received a call from a lady who heard a kitty meowing from a motor of a pickup in front of a mall with a movie theater. She waited for three hours beside the vehicle and when no one came back to the pickup in that time she left a note asking to be called if the person could not keep the cat. A couple of hours later she received a call at 7 pm which was after most of the shelters were closed. She took possession of the 10-week old kitten and called our shelter. We agreed to accept the orange and white male cat. The kitten was extremely friendly and thank goodness had not been hurt by his ride to his place of rescue! In both cases it was a miracle that the cats that had been abandoned were still alive. There are still people in Western Washington that believe that it is cruel to keep a cat or kitten indoors! With our population of humans growing by leaps and bounds that is definitely not an option! Once a rescued feline reaches the haven of Kitten Rescue it will receive the care that was missing before it arrived. Immunizations, flea control, worming and finally testing and altering will be completed. I believe that the cat understands that we care, because so much of the time we are thanked by purrs and snuggles from the grateful kitty. It will be adopted to an indoor only home. Twenty years of rescue before I retired and I never tired of the pleasure in entering our safe shelter and caring for our fuzzy friends. There is no feeling in the world any better than watching a kitten or cat go home with its proud new family. I was blessed with both grateful cats and fantastic volunteers that felt the same way I did. God is good! Have a Happy and Safe New Years. Granny Kat 2019 Now I never get tired of being a foster mama. My babies require daily care and feeding every three and a half hours. Praise the Lord I still have something special to look forward to every day. 2021
