Give your teeth a little fresh air every chance you get. And remember that most people can tell if you are smiling EVEN when wearing a mask!
Yes … elastic wear or lack of it, when prescribed, influences your treatment time! Elastics should be worn exactly as the doctor prescribes. If you forget to wear them do not double up the next day – that won’t make your teeth move any faster and it could make your mouth very sore. Follow the doctor’s instructions and we’ll get the movement we need to help you reach your deband date on time! Remember that you can always drop by our office during business hours if you need additional elastics.
We know it’s a little complicated to smile right now while wearing masks, but people know if there is a smile under there or not. So, keep on spreading smiles. People need them now more than ever!
We have all done it . . . using teeth to snap off a clothing price tag, open a bag of chips, or unscrew a bottle top. Teeth can be delicate and easily broken (and dental work, as well). Use your teeth for chewing and smiling and leave the other work to the tools.
Without looking at you phone or tablet … which of these is the Apple logo?

In honor of National Dental Hygiene Month, let’s talk about your heart! Gum inflammation has been shown in several studies to raise your risk of heart disease and stroke. This is thought to be because gum disease increases the inflammation throughout your body, which is known to lead to cardiovascular disease. Inflammation is a major risk factor for heart disease. Your dentist or hygienist should ask you about your heart health and family history of heart disease and conversely, cardiologists should examine your oral health. A problem in one area may signal trouble in the other. Keep your heart and your smile healthy!
We know, do you?
As we celebrate National Orthodontic Health Month, here’s an important reminder about the magical age of 7! Most children will have all their 6-year molars and at least four of their permanent anterior teeth when they turn 7. By monitoring a child's growth and development, we can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while baby teeth are present. Call our office today for a complimentary consultation.

This holiday has taken on a whole new meaning in 2020! The CDC says this about handwashing. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Wash the front and back of the hands, in between fingers and under nails. Use the cleanest water possible and dry hands completely with a single use towel. Use an alcohol-based hand rub that contains 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
As we continue to celebrate National Orthodontic Health Month in October, we want to encourage you and your family to be evaluated for orthodontic treatment. We can do that for you with a complimentary appointment – just call us to set it up!

Whatever your reason, call us for an evaluation to see how traditional braces, clear braces or Invisalign can work for you!

Soda Reality Check! There are 65 grams of sugar in a 20-oz bottle of Coca-Cola. That's about 16 teaspoons of sugar, which is two and a half times the recommended amount of daily sugar for a female adult and almost twice as much as the daily recommended for a male adult. Please limit your soda intake – for your teeth, your braces and your health!

On Thanksgiving Day, as we count our blessings, we count each and every patient twice!
We had you at bacon, right? These tender and buttery yeast dough pinwheels with sweet caramelized onions, salty bacon, and creamy Gruyere cheese would be a perfect and a little fancy addition to your Thanksgiving breadbasket!
Ingredients:
· 1/3 cup warm water (100°F to 110°F)
· 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
· 2 tablespoons plus 1 tsp. granulated sugar, divided
· 2/3 cup whole milk, warmed
· 2 large eggs
· 1/2 cup butter, melted, divided
· 4 cups bread flour
· 2 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided
· 12 ounces (6 to 7 slices) thick-cut bacon, chopped (about 2 1/2 cups)
· 3 medium-size yellow onions (about 1 3/4 lb.), thinly sliced (about 7 cups)
· 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
· 4 ounces Gruyere, finely shredded (about 1 1/2 cups)
· 1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
Instructions:
1. Stir together water, yeast, and 1 teaspoon of the sugar in a small bowl; let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
2. Combine yeast mixture, milk, eggs, 6 tablespoons of the butter, and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Mix on low until well combined, about 10 seconds. While mixer is running on low, gradually add flour and 2 teaspoons of the salt until incorporated. Increase speed to medium, and continue beating until dough is smooth and elastic, about 4 minutes. Dough will be sticky. Transfer to a lightly greased large bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
3. Meanwhile, cook bacon in a large skillet over medium, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 12 to 14 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate. Pour drippings through a fine mesh strainer into a small bowl. Reserve drippings, discarding any solids. Wipe skillet clean; return 2 tablespoons of drippings to skillet over medium-low. Add onions, pepper, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt; stir to combine. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened and beginning to brown, about 20 minutes. Uncover and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are golden brown, 10 to 15 minutes. Transfer onions to a medium bowl and cool completely, about 30 minutes.
4. Brush 18 muffin cups lightly with reserved bacon drippings. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Lightly flour top of dough; roll into an 18- x 14-inch rectangle. Spread onions in an even layer, leaving a 1-inch border on both long sides. Sprinkle bacon and Gruyere over onions. Starting with 1 long end, roll up
dough, jelly-roll style. Using a serrated knife or dental floss, cut into 18 (1-inch-wide) pieces. Place pinwheels, cut side up, in prepared muffin tins. Cover loosely with plastic wrap; let stand in a warm place until increased in size, about 45 minutes.
5. Preheat oven to 375°F. Remove plastic wrap, and bake in preheated oven until golden brown, 20 to 24 minutes. Meanwhile, stir together parsley and remaining 2 tablespoons butter. Brush butter mixture on hot rolls. Run a small offset spatula around edges of each pinwheel, and carefully transfer rolls to a wire rack. Serve warm, or cool completely, about 30 minutes.

The staff is amazing and Soo friendly. My son really liked Dr. Peterson.
A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to change the bird’s behavior. Finally, John yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer to get his attention. Immediately John feared he would hurt the bird, so he quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior." John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

We sure hope all our patients get to spend the holidays with family! In case you get to travel to Grandma’s house for the holidays, here are a few travel safety tips for your braces!
Here are a few items you should be certain to have on hand in addition to your trusty toothbrush:
• Wax
• Rubber Bands (if prescribed to wear)
• Tylenol or Ibuprofen
• Floss & Threaders
• Proxy Brush
• Orabase-B
Here are a few repair tips as well:
· Loose Band or Bracket: Leave it in place and try to put wax on it.
· Loose Wire: Try to put it back in place with tweezers. If you are not able to re-insert the wire, clip it using nail clippers behind the last tooth to which it is attached. Use wax if necessary.
· Poking Wire: Try to push it down using an eraser or use wax.
· Loose Appliance: Place wax on the appliance to keep it intact.
· Sore Teeth: Use warm saltwater rinses & take Tylenol or Ibuprofen as recommended.
If you have a problem while you are away, please call our office when you return home, so we can determine if a repair appointment is necessary. Tell Grandma we said Happy Holidays!

It would be wonderful if some of our patients could be inspired during their treatment to consider Orthodontics as a profession! So, let us tell you a little about the process. There are three steps in an orthodontist’s education: college, dental school, and orthodontic school.
Similar to becoming a medical specialist, such as a surgeon or an internist, orthodontists complete an orthodontic residency program for two to three years after dental school.
While there’s some instruction regarding orthodontics in dental school, it is minimal. It’s in the orthodontic residency program that orthodontists receive intensive instruction to learn proper, safe tooth movement (orthodontics) and the guidance of dental, jaw and facial development (dentofacial orthopedics). These extra years of education make the orthodontist the dental specialist in moving teeth and aligning jaws. This is the only focus of their practice.

January is NATIONAL SOUP MONTH, so we thought we would share a delicious soup recipe just in time to make this chilly weekend!
Ingredients:
4 oz dry elbow pasta or small shape
1 1/2 cups onion, chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
1 celery stalk, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp salted butter
2 tbsp flour
2 1/2 cups fat free low sodium chicken broth, or vegetable broth
1 cup fat free milk
pinch nutmeg
1/2 tsp dry mustard
salt and fresh pepper to taste
2 cups about 10 oz broccoli florets, chopped into small pieces
1-1/2 cups 2% sharp cheddar, best to grate yourself
2 tbsp Parmesan cheese
Directions:
1. Boil pasta in salted water according to package directions for al dente. Drain and set aside. 2. Chop onion, carrot, celery, garlic by hand or mini food processor.
3. In a large soup pot, melt saltd butter. Add chopped vegetables and sauté on low heat until soft, about 5 minutes.
4. Add flour and fresh pepper to the pot and stir until smooth.
5. Slowly add chicken broth, milk, nutmeg and dry mustard powder; whisking constantly.
6. Set heat to medium-low and let it come to a slow boil. Cover and cook on low about 10-15 minutes.
7. Add broccoli florets, parmesan cheese, and stir well. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
8. Cook uncovered until broccoli is cooked, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and wait until it stops boiling.
9. Add cheddar cheese a little at a time, mixing well until cheese melts.
10. Return the cooked elbows to the soup and mix well, adjust salt and pepper if needed.
11. Eat right away so the pasta doesn't absorb all the broth. www.skinnytaste.com

Most orthodontic problems are inherited. Some are “acquired,” developed over time like sucking the thumb or fingers, mouth breathing, dental disease, abnormal swallowing, poor dental hygiene, early or late loss of baby teeth, accidents, and poor nutrition. Sometimes an inherited orthodontic problem is complicated by an acquired problem. Whatever the cause, orthodontists are able to treat most conditions successfull

National Wear Red Day is the first Friday of every February, which is designated as AMERICAN HEART MONTH. This is when the nation comes together, igniting a wave of red from coast to coast to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and save lives. So, wear a little red for support!
We love selfies of beautiful smiles! And during the pandemic, selfie smiles are some of the only ones we see. Seventeen Magazine shared these tips for making the very best selfies:
1. Know your angles. Every face is different, but generally tucking down your chin and tilting your head slightly is pretty flattering. It makes your face look super angular.
2. Natural lighting is the ticket. Even with zero makeup on, natural lighting will give you that beautiful glow. Avoid fluorescent lighting at all costs.
3. Take selfies in the morning. In the morning your makeup is fresh, and your hair hasn't yet been destroyed by wind/humidity/gym class, which makes it the optimal time for a photo.
4. Channel your inner model. If you want a great pic, you better leave your shame at the door.
5. Camera up. Angles matter on your camera, too. Instead of smiling into the camera straight-on, hold your phone a little bit above you. It makes the photo look less intense and the downward angle is super flattering.
6. Clean your room. People do see your background!
7. Pick a filter and stick with it. If you've found a subtle filter that perfectly fits your vibe, use it on every pic.
8. Wear Shades! If you feel shy in front of a camera, shades can give you confidence.
February is National Pet Dental Health Month too. Your pet needs regular professional dental care from your Veterinarian and at home! Here are 3 steps to success for a pet’s dental health:
1. Take your pet to the Veterinarian for a dental exam if you suspect a problem. Some signs to look for are bad breath, brown or yellow teeth, excessive drooling, bleeding from the mouth, or a
change in eating and drinking habits.
2. Begin a dental care regimen at home. Your Veterinarian can suggest steps that may include brushing your pet’s teeth or a special dental care diet.
3. Schedule regular veterinary checkups. These are essential in helping your Veterinarian monitor the progress of your pet’s dental health routine – just like you visiting your dentist!
Remember this important message today and every day!
Sending LOVE to all our patients and their families on Valentine’s Day!
You don’t necessarily have to wait for a child’s molars to come in before seeing an Orthodontist! The American Association of Orthodontists suggest that children be seen at age 7 regardless of how many permanent teeth have erupted. Give us a call and we’ll monitor your child’s teeth and jaw development for you at no cost!
Our patients are our reason to SMILE!
Yes, you do! Children will lose all 20 of their baby teeth over the course of several years, usually by the ages of 12-13. These teeth will be replaced by up to 32 permanent teeth (28 without wisdom teeth!). As your child loses baby teeth, permanent ones will begin to erupt in their place. We would love to help monitor your child’s tooth and jaw development complimentary. Call us today for an appointment. The AAO suggests this evaluation process starts at age 7.

You’re not alone. One survey estimates that almost 75% of people have a fear of going to the Dentist. Talk to your Dentist about this. They will have some options to help you deal with the phobia!
During National Children’s Dental Health Month, we want to remind you that the American Association of Orthodontists suggest that children be seen by an Orthodontist by the age of seven. Not every orthodontic problem can be corrected at age seven, but most problems can be identified. We will monitor any child’s jaw growth and tooth development every 6 months until we determine if orthodontic treatment would be beneficial or not, and we do this complimentary!
Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day and boy do we need more kindness these days! We hope you’ll share this with everyone you know.
Ring Pops were invented by Frank Richards, a Product Engineer, in 1979 to help curtail his daughter's habit of thumb sucking. We have a better option! Ask us about an orthodontic evaluation for your thumb sucker today.
Put on a SMILE and make this a great day!
Why blend in, when you can stand out!
Happy Tennis Day to all you tennis lovers! It’s a good day for us to discuss wearing mouthguards. Tennis is on a comparably large court. There is no risk of running into your opponent or being hit by a wayward racket as can happen when playing racquetball. Regardless, you should always consider wearing protective goggles and a sports mouthguard when competing in any form of sport, especially when wearing braces!
Do you love coffee? Not as much as the coffee guy. Like and share if you can find the man in this picture in less than 5 seconds!
Happy Mom – Happy Everyone! Don’t forget to wear your retainers. Retention is one of the most important parts of orthodontic treatment.
Today is Read Across America Day - a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. We love this Dr. Seuss quote so much. A beautiful smile will make you stand out!

Wishing all our patients born in March a happy birthday! Congratulations on being high achieving, optimistic, night owls! It’s true … here's what science tells us about babies born in March:
1. They're likely to climb the corporate ladder
Babies born this month are the most likely to get that corner office when they grow up. Research indicates a higher percentage of CEOs are born in March than any other month!
2. They're less prone to myopia than their summer cousins March babies are more likely than their summer-born peers to pass an eye exam. A study of nearly 300,000 military applicants found spring kids are less likely to have myopic eyes.
3. They're naturally optimistic A 2014 study found March-born babies (and their April and May peers) are basically born optimists. They have high ratings on the hyperthymic scale as adults, which means they've got a positive outlook on life.
4. They'll probably be a night owl One sleep study suggests children born in the spring and summer generally go to bed later than those born in the fall and winter, so your March baby is likely to want to stay up past their bedtime in a few short years. That continues on through adulthood.
5. They'll be a Pisces or an Aries
These two astrological signs are known for their determination and passion, respectively. Babies born between March 1 and March 20 are known as optimistic Pisces, while those born after March 20 are officially spring baby members of the Aries sign. Aries are known for being fiery and passionate, so you might want to start practicing for bedtime arguments with your future night owl right away.
The greatest compliment a patient can pay us is to refer their family and friends to our practice. We thank you for talking about us, and we promise to treat your referrals with the best of care just as we do you!
Sunday is National Tooth Fairy Day. Children will begin losing primary teeth (baby teeth) around the age of 6. The first teeth to be lost are usually the central incisors. This is then followed by the eruption of the first permanent molars. The last baby tooth is usually lost around the age of 12, and is the cuspid or second molar. That’s when all that Tooth Fairy money usually ends!
National Dentist Day is Saturday and it celebrates all dental health specialists, including but not limited to, general dentists, orthodontists, periodontists, pediatric dentists, prosthodontists, dental assistants, dental technicians, dental hygienists and dental therapists. We are proud to be associated with so many fine dental professionals in our community! Why don’t you give a shout out to your favorite dental professional right here!
The truth: A too abrasive toothbrush or brushing your teeth too hard can erode some of the hard enamel that has a function of protecting the insides of the tooth from decay and cavities. Instead of keeping your teeth cleaner, this will actually harm them. Doctors always recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Not all heroes wear capes, but some wear an American Red Cross vest.
During March — which U.S. presidents have proclaimed as Red Cross Month for more than 75 years — the Red Cross honors its volunteer heroes and asks everyone to be a hero for people in need by becoming a volunteer, giving blood, learning skills that save lives, or donating.
As we all continue practicing social distancing, remember this … receiving a big SMILE is “almost” as good as a hug!
Did you know that March is “Save Your Vision Month”? Just as an Optometrist plays a vital role in your child’s health and future, Orthodontics play a huge role in young children’s health, appearance and self-confidence. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that an orthodontist examine a child’s teeth by the time they are 7 years old, even while baby teeth are still in the mouth. Dr. Peterson can pinpoint underlying problems and start correcting them to avoid potential problems for future adult teeth. By age 7, enough permanent teeth have emerged for us to evaluate relationships developing between teeth, jaw and bite and make sure all will continue to develop as they should. Whether we determine that your child needs braces, you will get the peace of mind that early detection and potential treatment will result in a lifelong smile for your child. So why not schedule your child’s eye exam and ortho exam at the same time.
Do you? “Like” if you do!
Sunday is National Common Courtesy Day. We thought this was interesting. According to a survey by Time magazine, 59% of people would rather have a dental appointment than sit next to someone who is talking too loud on a cell phone in public. Guilty or Innocent?
We think all our patients are RED Starburst!
Today is AWKWARD MOMENTS DAY. Don’t find yourself in this guy’s situation. Teeth have memories and will try to return to their pre-treatment position if you don’t wear your retainers as suggested. We want you to flash a great big, beautiful smile forever!
We’re curious what our patients in braces are missing the most!
Wherever you go and whatever you do, may the luck of the Irish be there with you!
It’s true, not everyone needs wires to have perfectly straight teeth. Invisalign, the non-bracket approach to a new smile, is another great option! Invisalign and aligner therapy use a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing. So, you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Aligners are made with 3-D computer imaging technology and has been proven effective.
Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem, and they are very comfortable. Curious how it works? You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to the final position we have prescribed. You'll visit us about once every six-eight weeks to ensure your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case. Give us a call if you think this treatment is right for you!
We love the busy summer months in our practice, but if you don’t, you can avoid them by setting up that important orthodontic evaluation now before school is out!
Having two dental cleanings a year is important for everyone, especially our patients in braces. Make sure your next 6-month appointment is already scheduled! In the meantime, be sure that you’re taking extra good care of your dental hygiene!
