Petworks Veterinary Hospital recommends yearly wellness exams for the same reason your physician recommends them for you and your family. If a problem is detected in its early stages, it is more likely to be treated and resolved with less difficulty, less expense and better success.
Petworks Veterinary Hospital offers Wellness Plans for your four legged friend that are affordable and comprehensive. Wellness care applies to all stages of your pet’s life.
If you are like most pet owners the first thing you think of is vaccinations. A wellness visit is more than just the yearly vaccines. A comprehensive physical exam is one of the best tools for keeping your pet healthy.

All pets are required to be current on rabies, kennel cough (Bordetella), and Distemper/Parvo vaccines in order to stay with us.
If your pet has been given these vaccines at another clinic please bring their records. If you are not sure or the vaccines are not current your pet will receive these vaccines upon arrival. This is to ensure the well being of your pet, other boarding animals, and the kennel staff.
During your pets stay at Petworks they will receive the best care. Dogs are walked several times daily. The dog and cat areas are kept exceptionally clean by our kennel staff. The dog area is separate from the cat areas to allow a comfortable atmosphere for both. The cat area has windows for basking in the sun.
We are conveniently located at 92nd & Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS.

Thanksgiving is a time for friends, family and holiday feasts—but also a time for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on undercooked turkey or a pet-unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.
Check out the following tips for a fulfilling Thanksgiving that your pets can enjoy, too:
• If you decide to feed your pet a small bite of turkey, make sure it’s boneless and well-cooked. Don't offer her raw or undercooked turkey, which may contain salmonella bacteria. Do not give your pet the left over carcass–the bones can be problematic for the digestive tract.
• Don't spoil your pet’s holiday by giving him access to raw yeast bread dough. When a dog or cat ingests raw bread dough, the yeast continues to convert the sugars in the dough to carbon dioxide gas and alcohol. This can result in bloated drunken pets, which could become a life-threatening emergency, requiring hospitalization.
• If you plan to bake Thanksgiving desserts, be sure your pets keep their noses out of the batter, especially if it includes raw eggs—they could contain salmonella bacteria that may lead to food poisoning.
• While your family enjoys a special meal, give your cat and dog a small feast of their own. Offer them made-for-pets chew bones. Or stuff their usual dinner—perhaps with a few added tidbits of turkey, vegetables (try sweet potato or green beans) and dribbles of gravy—inside a food puzzle toy. They’ll be happily occupied for awhile, working hard to extract their dinner from the toy.
A few small boneless pieces of cooked turkey, a taste of mashed potato or even a lick of pumpkin pie shouldn’t pose a problem. However, don't allow your pets to overindulge, as they could wind up with a case of stomach upset, diarrhea or even worse—an inflammatory condition of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. In fact, it’s best keep pets on their regular diets during the holidays.

Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian to check for early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.
To address the significance of oral health care for pets, Petworks sponsors National Pet Dental Health Month every February. Take part by learning more about how you can improve the dental (and overall) health of your pets. Take advantage of our 20% OFF Pet Dental Care Services All Month Long!
HOW CAN I HELP MY PET'S ORAL HEALTH?
Consistent dental assessments and cleaning are important to prevent the most common dental diseases. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be examined at least once a year at a routine visit.
Dr Callicott will look at your cat or dog’s teeth and gums to make sure there is no evidence of dental disease. We have products to brush your pet's teeth at home & Oravet dental chews or Greenies for your pet to keep their teeth healthy between cleanings.

KEEP YOUR CAT HEALTHY WITH ROUTINE VACCINATIONS
In the United States it is a requirement to immunize felines to safeguard their health and to also ensure the safety of humans who come into contact with feline pets. Both Kansas and Missouri require an annual rabies vaccination. It is highly recommended that cats also receive recommended core vaccinations because of their higher risk for potential exposure to various diseases.
Kitten and adolescent cats are at greater risk of infection, depending on numerous factors, including their mother’s medical history, immature immune system, and a higher likelihood of exposure. When our veterinarians treat kittens, we recommend scheduling a set of vaccination boosters to bolster the immune system against the threat of outside infections.
We recommend that even indoor-only cats still get their annual vaccinations. Indoors cats who “accidentally” escape outdoors are at risk of getting into fights with other animals. Despite an interior lifestyle, indoor cats are still instinctual hunters. They will often stalk and kill any vermin that they encounter in their home. For this reason, cats are the number one reported domesticated animal infected with rabies in the United States. Please protect your kitten or cat from this deadly disease by making sure that they are vaccinated.
