About

Pivot is a nonprofit that works with youth lacking stability in their lives. They are homeless, couch homeless, alone or disengaged. Most are ages 12 to 21 with barriers in their lives without resources to overcome them and transition into self-reliant adults. Pivot services focus on meeting housing and basic needs; education and job assistance; mentoring and life skills; prevention and intervention services; and therapeutic care.
Housing/Basic Needs: There are young people who need a safe, secure place to stay as well as access to food, personal hygiene items and clothing. Pivot offers support and resources through its food pantry and clothing closets, as well as short and long-term housing solutions. Whether in the child welfare system, living on their own without parental support, formerly juvenile justice involved, or a runaway—we can provide safe, stable housing.
Education/Job Assistance: Pivot believes regardless of where a child is from or the barriers they face, they are worthy of having success in education, finding a job and planning for a career in the field they choose. At Pivot, part of each young person’s experience includes the opportunity to graduate from high school, further their education, gain vital life skills and achieve job readiness.
Prevention/Intervention: Bad decisions, environmental factors, addiction, unidentified trauma, lack of supervision and undiagnosed mental health disorders can lead youth down the wrong path. Youth are equipped to dramatically change the trajectory of their lives helping them transition from a life of fear and instability to that of hope and opportunity.
Therapeutic Care: Our licensed therapists and specialists are trained to identify adverse childhood experiences ranging from physical, emotional or sexual abuse, to community violence, parental divorce or the incarceration of a parent or guardian. Pivot can help with depression, poor nutrition, high risk behaviors, substance abuse, anxiety and grief.

They had a “Soctober” event and collected 303 pairs of socks to give to those in need. And when they heard that socks were on our 12 Days of Giving list, it was a perfect fit. Thanks for thinking of ways to help youth - you are having a big impact!
There are no words to describe our love for the amazing team at Varietycare. Not only do the doctors and nurses come weekly to supply medical services for our youth, they go above and beyond by doing things like bringing meals and providing thoughtful gifts! Last night they brought supplies to make gingerbread houses and Christmas cookies. At Pivot, we work hard to make our programs feel like home for the youth we serve. Kind gestures like this get us closer to that goal. Thank you Variety Care!

Our holiday party looked a little different this year, but it was still a great time to safely see the youth we serve and give them presents that so many friends and supporters helped pick out just for them. A New Year message from our board chair, Peter Fulmer.
Pivot is proud to be chosen to receive the Spark Innovation Grant from Thrive OKC. Key staff members from Pivot are invited to be a part of a cohort to develop programs to address the issues of rising teen pregnancy and STI rates. We are excited to have a seat at the table!
This is a throwback to years ago when one of our youth wrote this essay at school about the Family Junction. The FJ is our shelter for minors. Some are here for several days, some for several months. Many are in DHS custody and this is just a stopping point on their journey. No matter their story, we always have the same goal. To make them feel accepted and wanted. #acceptedandwanted #throwbackthursday
January’s Employee of the Month is Megan-Joy Markey. Megan is an important part of the Pivot family and always has a smile on her face. We are lucky to have her!
This sweet couple just showed up at our front door. They decided to take their stimulus money and go buy items for our youth! Thank you Klines for your kind hearts AND service to our country!
We are so excited to launch our #giftcards4good campaign. This is a great way to support your favorite local restaurant and support Pivot in feeding meals to kids living in our shelters. We will be sharing local restaurants who have gift card drop boxes for Pivot or you can drop off to us directly. If you are a local restaurant and want to host a drop box, just let us know and we will mention you. For more information, contact chandy.rice@pivotok.org. #supportlocal #supportrestaurants #homelessyouth #giftcards4good #okrestaurants #bethegood
Today we wear blue for Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Pivot works with all our youth who have been affected by human trafficking by providing counseling services, as well as, providing them a safe place where their physical, mental and emotional needs are met. We stand together to fight this crisis head-on! #wearblueday 💙
Be prepared for a great #payitforward story. - These are the Klines. We wrote about them last week because they showed up at our front door after using their entire stimulus check to purchase items for Pivot. They are active duty military and stationed here in Oklahoma. - Shortly after the post, David with @84hospitality contacted us. He was so inspired by their kind act that he wanted to contact them and offer them a free meal from @empiresliceshop . - Fast forward to last night. The Klines showed up at Empire for their meal. Surprisingly the shocked Klines were handed a pizza box with $600 worth of gift cards from local restaurants. On a whim David had asked his friends to purchase gift cards for the Klines. It was a way to support our struggling local restaurants and to #payitforward . We are all inspired! Thank you Klines and thank you @84hospitality for your kindness and generosity. Let us all learn from this example and in a time of darkness and difficulty in our country, let us be light and peace. More to come on this. Stay tuned!!
Throwback Thursday to a little over a year ago when our leadership and supporters made the decision to build a drop-in shelter. Shortly after the groundbreaking, the pandemic hit! But that didn’t stop us! Due to the hard work of staff and contractors, we were STILL able to open The Point in June 2020! Today, The Point is a safe place for displaced youth around the city. Open 365 days a year, young people can shower, do laundry, use WiFi and have a hot meal. Additionally, they can meet with a therapist to get mental health assistance, meet with a DHS worker to sign up for benefits like SNAP, or meet with a doctor from Variety Care to address their medical needs. We have support groups, game nights, holiday parties and a host of other offerings that make this place HOME to so many young people! We are so thankful for those who stepped up a year ago to make The Point a reality! #throwbackthursday #homelessyouth #homesweethome
When it feels like our world is a big pot of boiling water, we pause today to reflect on the words and life of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” At Pivot we have an entire team of licensed therapists who spend time with our youth helping them wade through the darkness to find the light. In this difficult time, let all us all drive out the darkness and hate with light and love!
Several have asked about us being featured for Target Circle this month. Swipe right for info!
We are so excited to be chosen for the “Outstanding Community Building Effort” by ULI Oklahoma. Our Tiny Home community is a work of love. We are so thankful for all our partners. It truly is taking the entire building community to build this community! Be on the lookout for more details on how to be involved with our next stage of development for this project!
Meet Terrell Johnson. Terrell is the Director of our Community Intervention Center(CIC) and also happens to be a talented artist. Terrell’s artwork is on display in the entry to Pivot during the month of February. This month at Pivot we want to celebrate Black History Month by celebrating the people who have paved the way for a better humanity. We recognize that in order to look forward, we also need to look back. We need to be better and we need to do better. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” - Barack Obama
Our February Employee of the Month is Janeal Jones. Janeal has worked at Pivot for 5 years. She works in our Family Junction shelter and is an invaluable part of the team. Family Junction Director, Chris Harvard, says “Janeal’s hard work and dedication is an example to everyone at Pivot! She does everything from cooking meals to sitting with kids when they need an ear to listen! We are so thankful for her and her commitment to our mission here!” Congratulations Janeal. Well deserved!
Our Community Intervention Center, Family Junction Shelter and the Point Shelter remain open and the kids are all safe and warm inside. Our admin offices are closed today and tomorrow. If you need anything, email contact@pivotok.org and we will respond as soon as possible.

Today at all-staff meeting we spent time talking about diversity, equity and inclusion. It was a great training lead by some of our amazing staff who talked about their own experiences with discrimination. Shout out to Shantel, Genesis, Karen and Day’Quann. We are thankful for an open environment where we can have difficult conversations. As our CEO, Jennifer Goodrich says “When we know better, we can do better!” Let us all strive to know better by entering into these conversations with open ears and open minds! #knowbetterdobetter

March is Women’s History Month. This month we will be highlighting some of the strong women leaders in our organization. First up is Jennifer Goodrich, our CEO. Happy International Women’s Day! Today we feature Stacey Armitage as our female leader. Stacey has been with a Pivot for 21 years and is one of the more “credentialed” staff members we have. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) and Case Manager (CM). Stacey leads with a positive attitude and joyful spirit and is the type of person that everyone loves to be around. If you are ever on Pivot campus, take a peek at Stacey’s office. It’s a true reflection of her! Bright colors and happiness everywhere! We love our Stacey A.! #internationalwomensday #womenleaders #smartwomen #womeninmentalhealth
Meet the 4 strong, smart women who make up the supervisory team for our Community Intervention Center (CIC). Cecilia (CeCe) Madonna, Genesis Brown, Michelle Johnson and Rubye Coulter. “We are a group of strong, diverse women with strong voices, who refuse to be silenced, refused to minimized. As women leaders it’s our responsibility to show up and to advocate for the youth and members in our communities and we do so fearlessly and unapologetically. We thank the diverse women trailblazers in our past that worked so hard against adversity to give us the opportunity to become leaders now and we will sow a path of seeds for the next generation of future leaders to do the same.” The CIC is our 24/7 program that works with youth who are picked up by law enforcement. Although it is a chaotic job at times, these 4 women keep their teams running smoothly. The CIC is a place where youth can get the resources they need to hopefully stay out of the criminal justice system as they grow up. Youth can, not only, find a listening ear and compassion from these women, they are able to see an example of what it means to work hard and be successful in everything you do! #womenshistorymonth #womensupportingwomen #strongwomen
Another staff highlight for Women’s History Month is Lyndsie Stremlow. Lyndsie is our education specialist and has had her hands full during COVID with virtual school for the youth in our shelters. “Being a female leader and education advocate on the spectrum and with learning disabilities is more meaningful to me than I ever thought possible because so many of our youth struggle with similar conditions. Autism in females can be difficult to diagnose and easily misdiagnosed due to our tendency to mask our issues so we fit in socially. My condition went unnoticed and misdiagnosed until adulthood and this took a toll on my sense of self, my career choices, my education, my relationships, and really my entire understanding of the world and where I fit in it. If I can help one child suffering from learning disabilities find their strengths and opportunities in a world that still views neurodiversity as a problem to be overcome rather than a unique gift to offer to the world, I will consider all of my struggles worth it.” We are thankful for Lyndsie and her transparency and engagement with our youth! #womenshistorymonth #strongwomen #womenonthespectrum

One question we frequently are asked is, “why don’t you show more pictures of the kids at Pivot?” The answer is... we work very hard to protect the privacy of the youth we serve. With that being said, today we found the perfect opportunity to take a picture of one of the amazing teens living in our Family Junction shelter. He took this remote control car and rebuilt it with parts from flashlights, remote controls and any other electronics he could get his hands on. He even converted it to a higher voltage so it would drive faster. The youth we serve are each smart and special in their own unique ways. We consider it an honor to get to share life with them in the short or long time they are with us on the Pivot campus.
Meet Karen Martinez. Karen is a valuable part of the team at Pivot and has been a key leader in our efforts to promote a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. She is also extremely innovative and recently saw a need and led the start of our therapy dog program. Karen is definitely proof that you can be a strong leader and be quiet at the same time! We are fortunate to have Karen on our team! #womenshistorymonth #strongvoice #diversityequityinclusion #mexicanamericanleader

Meet Melissa Russell! Melissa leads at Pivot through her willingness to always help in any situation and her reliability! “ I have been with Pivot for 14 years and I’ve learned the best way I can lead is through consistency. This is something I try to accomplish in my personal life as well. I decide 4 years ago to go back to school and continue my education. I am now a graduate of my Bachelors degree with a certification in Human Resource Management, which is a huge accomplishment for me. It shows my children to never give up on your dreams. This is a mindset I also bring to Pivot. The world is constantly changing! If I can focus on being a consistent person that people can rely on, I can make a difference in the lives of those around me.” We are thankful for Melissa’s leadership! #womenshistorymonth #womenwholead
