Dr. Reitz just became Fear Free Certified! We want your pets to have the best experience when they visit and we love seeing them happy! She shares her reasons why below: Why Fear Free? Fear Free is a new initiative in veterinary medicine that allows the veterinary team to work together to relieve the stress, anxiety, and fear pets often feel at visits to the veterinarian. Our goal is to help your pet feel safe and comfortable while receiving the comprehensive quality medical care they – and you – deserve. Fear Free care starts with calm, gentle handling and often lots of treats! A personal plan is developed for each patient based on what they like and need, how they prefer to be handled, their favorite kind of treat, and any additional medications and supplements they need in order to help them relax at their visit. Fear Free provides me with the tools I need to develop a more positive relationship with my patients and their “parents.” Our team works together to deliver the best possible care to your pet by decreasing stress and anxiety, which support their overall health and promotes healing. Imagine a dog who begins his visit trembling on the floor ending it by blissfully accepting treats from our technician, or a cat who starts out timidly hiding in her carrier boldly popping her head out to investigate the toys placed on the table inviting her to play. Many patients have shown this kind of improvement in just a few visits, with some even becoming noticeably more relaxed on the first one. I love the program because I enjoy seeing so many of our patients more relaxed and even happy to see us! Dr. Reitz wants all of our patients to have a great experience so she became a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and is working towards her Feline Friendly certification!

Worried about the stress of bringing your pet to the vet? Tune in weekly for Dr. Reitz tip of the week! Tip #1 below: “Music soothes the savage beast.” It may sound like an old cliché, but soft relaxing music has been shown to help relieve anxiety for some animals even in stressful situations. Try playing quiet calming music in the car on the way to your appointment and enjoy taking a peaceful drive with your pet.

Panga did so awesome on her first vet visit with us! She got a special treat and had to show everyone! Such a sweet baby girl!
Fear Free Tip of the Week: They always seem to know when they’re going to the vet, don’t they? So many pets become anxious about their visits even before they get in the car, but there are some things you can do to help them feel more comfortable. If your pet travels in a carrier try leaving it out at home all the time so they become comfortable with it. Feed them in or near it and put some favorite treats and toys in it. Make the carrier their “happy place.” Place a towel in the carrier and leave it there when they travel so they have the scent of home always with them. You can also bring a towel from home if your pet rides in the car without a carrier. The towel can go in the hospital with them so they continue to have the scent of home during their visit. Like most of us, our furry friends find comfort in the familiar.
Happy Halloween! We hope that everyone has a fun, candy-filled holiday! Remember to keep your sweets away and out of reach from your pets. We don’t want any scary accidents! Have a spooky Halloween!

Fear Free Tip of the Week!! Thanks Dr. Reitz! Buckle up for safety! This includes your pet family. Make sure your pet is secured for their car ride so they don’t slide or fall if you need to make a sudden stop or take a sharp turn. It’s safer for them and will help them feel more secure, reducing stress and anxiety. Small carriers can be put on the back seat and buckled in using a standard seat belt. There are even dog car seats and special harnesses that can be used to help your pet stay relaxed and safe on their travels.

Hello everybody! I wanted to take a moment to let you know of a very special interest I have. Pocket Pets, particularly rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets, Rats, and Hamsters! Just like dogs and cats, our pocket pet companions need regular wellness exams to keep them in good health. The incidences of dental problems is much higher in pocket pets and early intervention helps them to have good quality of life. Our regular checkups include a thorough physical exam, including eyes, ears, skin, and internal organs. Young and adult ferrets not only need regular assessments, they also need annual vaccinations for the Distemper virus. All of these little furries need regular pedicures by trained pocket pet technicians and we just happen to have a very friendly and experienced technician, Joy, ready to help! We are looking forward to meeting your little pocket pets soon!
Fear Free Tip of the Week! Many of us love our pets because they seem to sense when we’re sad, when we want to play, and when we just need a little companionship. Pets are masters at reading and responding to body language. Now let’s take a trip to the vet. You may feel a little anxious about the visit yourself, especially if your friend is ill or has been stressed by previous visits. From the moment that carrier or leash comes out to the car ride and all the way to the end of the visit, who will your pet be watching for clues? Who do they trust the most to show them how they should react? Our furry companions look at us when facing new and potentially stressful situations. When we are anxious and nervous they think there must be something to worry about. Often when we respond to new situations as a normal part of life they respond the same way. So stay calm and carry on! You might be surprised at how much it can help your pet stay fear free, too.
In observance of Thanksgiving, we will be closing Wednesday at 3pm and closed all day Thursday. We will be back on Friday from 8am - 5pm. Wishing you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Do you know someone who was affected financially by COVID and needs to get there pet vaccinated? We can help! Vaccines provide our pets protection from many diseases, and cost of treatment (if there is even a treatment available) can be exponential if an unvaccinated pet were to contract one of these diseases. For some, the costs of vaccines are out of reach. Our community means a lot to us and we do not want our pets to go unvaccinated and our pet parents have to deal with the devastating effects. For the first time, Plantation Animal Hospital is offering a low cost vaccine clinic to those families who are in need. We will have vaccines priced between $15-25, heartworm testing for $20, Deworming (in lieu of a fecal analysis) for $10, and the exams at no cost. We will also have county tags available at the cost the county asks us to charge. These visits are by appointment only and space is filling fast. Please call our office to schedule, (813) 968-3393. This is an honor system for those that cannot afford to have their pets vaccinated. If you know of someone in need, be sure to forward. The date is this Sunday, January 24th from 10-2pm by appointment only
