Having Adequate Insurance on your Home/Apartment
The key is to make sure that all foreseeable areas of insurance risk are covered. A single gap in your property insurance coverage could wipe out years, if not decades of hard earned savings. Even though you have a policy, it does not mean you are fully covered. Here is a list of common gaps in property insurance coverage. Umbrella coverage - Unless you are one of the tiny percentage of people who can afford to self-insure against such calamities, you need umbrella liability insurance. Generally this type of insurance runs $250 - $400 annually for $1million worth of coverage. Higher limits are also available. This coverage kicks in if you are sued and you have exhausted the underlying liability limits on your car and homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies. Renters – A lot of renters go without renters insurance at their own peril. If you are a renter, imagine how you would be affected if you lost everything in your apartment. Don’t go without this inexpensive coverage. Replacement cost on household possessions – Replacement cost coverage is a low-cost option that is added to your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. This provision will replace your belongings at today’s prices and is far preferable to the standard actual cost coverage, which factors in depreciation and reimburses you for substantially less. Valuables – The coverage provided by your homeowner’s or renter’s policy for valuables is pitifully low. The average policy is limited to $1,000 to $2,000 of coverage for all jewelry and other valuables. If you have jewelry, art, antiques, and collectibles, you should have a rider on your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy that will cover your valuables in case they are stolen, lost, or damaged, based on what it would cost to replace those items at retail. The amount of coverage for each item is based upon sales receipts and appraisals you have provided to your insurer when you buy the extra coverage.
