As we continue to introduce you to some of the amazing people who make up Centura-Porter Adventist Hospital, it’s time for you to meet Gala Covington. At the age most of us are beginning to wind down a career, Gala was still going strong. The secretary on our 5 East patient unit, she retired last week after 26 years with us – at 81 years young! She says she’s been blessed her whole life, and that attitude has been the secret of her happiness. Gala grew up in rural Lyon County, Kentucky, where her mom cooked everything from scratch, and their family put up their own fruits and vegetables for winter. Wood stoves and fireplaces, and all the associated work, provided heat for the family. Gala’s mom was often ill, so Gala regularly picked up household responsibilities and took care of her six younger siblings. When Gala was 18 years old, she moved to Denver and discovered what it was like to live with electricity for the first time in her life. She began her career as a “live-in” at a nursing home but was “fired” for moving into an apartment with her husband, which initiated her 34-year career with the now-former Mercy Hospital in Denver. Eventually she made her way to Porter where she’s been for over 20 years. When asked what message she’d like to leave with her Porter family in retirement, Gala said, “Be good to each other, help each other, love one another; because we never know what tomorrow will bring.” Gala wants us to “Live one day at a time and trust in God.” She is so grateful to have worked here all these years, and she’s glad we’ve kept her this long! “Thanks for the ride; it’s been wonderful,” she says. Gala, we’re the ones who need to thank you for all your years of service. Your wit, practical wisdom and dedicated work have been a living example of Christ’s healing ministry. So, thank you! (This story is one of a series from our Mission Integration Director, Jim Feldbush, who leads our hospital chaplains and inspires us regularly with encouragement and stories about our colleagues.)

We have a lot, and we mean a LOT, of incredible and caring associates at Centura-Porter Adventist Hospital. We’d like to begin introducing some of them to you—our community--to help you get to know us, and our compassionate care, a bit better. Today, you’ll meet Danielle Grant. There are very few people in the world who can light up a room without even being there, but when she calls into our daily “safety huddle” meeting and says, “Hi Honey,” you know there’s at least one! Many of us know Danielle as our Sterile Processing Manager, who works behind the scenes to ensure we’re compliant with all appropriate processes, protocols and standards when it comes to instruments in the operating room. Danielle and her team fulfill our mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ by focusing on patient safety in every minute detail, making sure the people we serve receive the very best care we can offer. She says, “I have a passion for people to see their worth, value and how much they matter.” Not only do Danielle’s colleagues say she’s level headed, considerate and communicates well; they also say she puts others first and is generous in praising them. The person who makes everyone else feel good, but has a hard time talking about herself, doesn’t want a single soul to feel alone or neglected. She says, “Even if I don’t know you…I am still going to talk to you.” Danielle, you are a bright spot in each day for us. Thank you for being just who you are and never stop calling us honey! (This story comes from our Mission Integration Director, Jim Feldbush, who leads our hospital chaplains and inspires us regularly with encouragement and stories about our colleagues.)

“Someday I’m going to hug you.” COVID-19 has changed how we interact with one another, but it hasn’t diminished the power of love and kindness, even among strangers. In June, while living with end-stage kidney disease, Noemi Aguilar received the gift of life from a woman she didn’t know. Surgeons at Centura Transplant at Porter Adventist Hospital were able to save Noemi’s life thanks to the generosity of someone who just wanted to help. Watch the moment Noemi meets her living kidney donor, Becky, for the first time. CENTURA.ORG Empathy and Compassion Can Keep Our Communities Flourishing Through These Difficult Times | Centura Health Centura Health November 13 at 3:01 PM · Important words from Dr. Andrew French: "While early confusion was fueled by initial messaging that face coverings don’t minimize exposure to the virus, the science is abundantly clear - masks do guard against community spread. In other words, by wearing masks, we protect others. And since asymptomatic infection with COVID-19 happens frequently, universal mask-wearing is an essential tool in our protection arsenal while we wait on a vaccine."

Our bodies don't develop instant immunity after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine - particularly after the first dose. That means we remain susceptible to contracting and spreading the virus, even up to two weeks after receiving the second dose. We realize it can be confusing to keep up with all the latest vaccine news. But we're here to help. Visit our Vaccine Information page at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information for clarity and answers.
