First off, the rule book is not abundantly clear about how to award championships during a season in which only a few race weekends were completed. With some interpretation by our referees and board of directors, here is how championships will be awarded for 2020, followed by a more technical explanation of why: 2020 Class Championships: The champion (first place) for each class championship will be awarded, assuming they meet the minimum points threshold. 2nd and 3rd places will not be awarded. Title, Clubman, and Vintage: These championships will award 1st through 5th places, assuming they meet the minimum points threshold. These award winners can choose to use their 2020 championship number as their race number for the 2021 season. With that, we say congratulations to our 2020 OMRRA champions! In a Race Class Season Championship with five or fewer races only the champion receives a year-end trophy, and then only if that racer reaches 30 points." Rule L-7 clearly defines that in a championship with "five or fewer races", only the champion (first place) receives an award, and only if they reach 30 points. This rule was followed as-written in awarding class championships. "(L-9) Season-end trophies are awarded in the Title and Clubman Championships to the top five finishers who score at least 150 points in a seven-race, or 120 points in a six-race series. Vintage Championship trophies are awarded to the top five finishers who score at least 100 points in a seven-race, or 80 points in a six-race series." Rule L-9 defines the Title, Clubman, and Vintage championships and differently from L-7, does not define what to do in the "five or fewer" situation we are in. Note that "seven-race" or "six-race" series has been interpreted as "seven-race-weekend" or "six-race-weekend". Regardless, no single class had more than four individual race starts in 2020. Since direct instructions are not provided in the rule, the intent was interpreted to advise us how to handle our championships this year. Some quick math shows us that 150/7 = 21.4 and 120/6 = 20, suggesting that "20.7 points per race weekend" are required to award the Title and Clubman awards. In 2020, we completed 2 race weekends, so 41.4 points is the minimum to be awarded a place in the Title or Clubman championships. Similarly for the Vintage championship, 100/7 = 14.3 and 80/6 = 13.3, for an average of "13.8 points per race weekend". 27.6 points is the minimum to be awarded a place in the Vintage championship. Trophies The beautiful year-end trophies we have awarded over the past few years are produced per OMRRA's specifications by an overseas supplier. As you can imagine, the supply chain for these trophies was challenging this year due to shutdowns. Long story short, OMRRA does not have trophies to award at this time. The board is considering some alternatives and working with winners to develop a plan. 2020 Awards Banquet As you might expect, we are unable to host an awards banquet this year due to health concerns, insurance, and restrictions on gatherings. This shouldn't stop you from gathering with your race buddies, at a safe and responsible distance, to celebrate your achievements in 2020 and plan your race strategies for next year. T-shirts If you purchased an OMRRA T-shirt with your 2020 license, they will be available at the first race round in 2021. Due to the timing of our only round at PIR, and when the shirts were delivered, we were unable to distribute them in July. We Always Need More Volunteers The need for volunteers never stops since OMRRA is a volunteer-run organization. A lot happens during the off-season, and you can be a part of it.
