Lets talk angle stops! That little knob behind your toilet and under all your sinks that turns off the water in case of emergency, you guessed it! That is called an "angle stop" and most likely, you rarely bother with it.
However, it is important to turn them on and off on a regular basis to make sure they are working properly. Just in case an emergency occurs, you'll know that little part will be up to par to do its job and turn the water off.

For all you new home owners: First off, congrats! That is a huge milestone and very exciting!
Here are a couple of helpful tips for you as a new home owner.
- Know where all the shut offs are around your house in case of emergency and you need to shut off the gas or the water.
- Get familiar with your main lines going into the house and where they are located (also if you have a cleanout) in case any leaks or backups occur.
Is your water heater fairly new but the pilot light keeps going out? This may be a simple fix! The first step you can take before having to call a professional to come out would be to clean the air intake screen.
In order for the pilot to stay lit, it requires air flow. For most tank style water heaters, you'll see a small glass box at the bottom of the water heater. If you turn the lights off and shine light underneath, you'll see the screen. Since there is so much air flow, it naturally builds dust and dirt causing it to clog. You'll want to clean that out then try relighting your heater. Please be sure the water heater has cooled down before cleaning!! If the pilot still doesn't stay lit, then call a professional and a part may need to be replaced.
