Hello PUSD Families,
I hope this fall Friday finds you all well. Today I am updating you on the state metrics that help us to determine safe reopening of schools. I am a bit frustrated with the one metric, cases per one hundred thousand, as it's rate is moving too slowly to open up on the much hoped for first quarter timing. At this current rate, it looks like it will be pushing back our hopeful return to full in-person learning, at least slightly, if it continues at this rate.
Yavapai County's data is still looking good and trending in the right direction. Percent positivity is down to 1.9%. Hospital visits for COVID-like illness did increase from 2.4% last week to 3.2% this week. However, we are still meeting this benchmark even with the increase. COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people continues downward. The metrics show that Yavapai County is at 20 cases per 100,000 people, down from 23 last week. The benchmark for returning to in-person instruction is less than 10 cases per 100,000 people. Yavapai County is currently meeting two of the three benchmarks needed to return to full in-person instruction. It's important to note that the data on the AZDHS schools dashboard does not always match the daily COVID-19 updates from Yavapai County Community Health Services. This is because the AZDHS dashboard "does not look at the past two weeks due to potential lags in data." Here's a link to the AZDHS schools dashboard if you'd like to take a look. Make sure to click on Yavapai County to see our data.
While we aren't quite ready to move to full in-person instruction, we have been solidifying our plans to do so as soon as it is safe. We thought it would be helpful to provide some information to families about the health and safety procedures and protocols that will be in place during full in-person instruction. It’s important to remember that in-person learning will not look “typical” or like school did prior to school closures in March 2020. Below are some highlights, but click here if you'd like to see more information.
Cloth face coverings will be required, per Governor Ducey’s Executive Order.
Frequent handwashing and sanitizing will continue to be promoted. Classrooms have been equipped with hand sanitizers, and handwashing stations have been added around campuses.
Families will continue to conduct health screenings with their children every morning before school.
Cleaning protocols will continue to follow CDC guidelines with high touch areas continuing to be cleaned and sanitized frequently.
Desks and tables will be spaced out as much as possible.
Plexiglass dividers will be used in classrooms with tables, when possible.
Visitors and volunteers may be allowed on campuses depending on the purpose of the visit and the ability to physically distance. Cases will be evaluated individually.
Hybrid learning in PUSD continues to go very well. We are grateful for the partnership that we have with our PUSD families. Because families have monitored temperatures and symptoms, encouraged children to remain serious about masks, physical distancing and hand washing, we continue to keep COVID out of our schools. Thank you for doing your part!
For your information, I have also attached an article today that will run in the newspaper next week. Feel free to preview my summary of reopening, along with facts of the PUSD Override that will be on the ballot November 3.
Sincerely,
Joe Howard
Superintendent

Some Thanksgiving tales from our students at Taylor Hicks Elementary School to bring us a smile as we get ready for the holiday break.
We always love to read the clever and funny stories kids write. A Turkey named “Bob” and a Turkey escaping the fate of becoming a hot dog are just a couple of stories from our creative writers. 😁🦃
