At Prime Motor Cars we would like to Celebrate Black History Month today by honoring Charles Richard Patterson. The patriarch of the first African-American founded car company.
Born a slave in 1833 on a Virginia plantation. He learned the trade of blacksmithing and was involved in the construction of carriages and coaches. Working his way up to being a partner in ownership of the J.P. Lowe & Company (circa 1888). Sadly Mr Patterson passed away in 1910, his son Frederick then took over the business and decided they needed to get into the "horseless carriage" business. On Sept 23, 1915, the first C.R. Patterson and Son automobile was assembled, a two door coupe that sold for $685.

Born in Queens, New York in 1922 as a child he showed a great interest in cars. in 1941 he joined the U.S. Army and served in WWII as an engineering design layout coordinator for the Army Signal Corps.
Staying with the Army until 1953, he then applied for a scholarship for the Art Center College of Design in CA. Granted the scholarship backed by Motor Trend magazine, he then was the first African-American to attend the school. Upon graduation in 1956, he then went on to work for the Ford Motor Company and was the first African-American Automotive Designer and was involved in the first generations of the Ford Bronco, Mustang, Thunderbird and GT40. He retired from Ford in 1984 and sadly passed in 2006.

After 44 years at General Motors he retired in July, 2016.
He currently lives in Warren, MI with his wife Jessie and is the proud father of 2 children as well as 2 grandchildren.

American made vehicles have been on the market since the turn of the century. But as they grew more popular, the issue of them sharing roads became a problem. In 1922, Mr. Morgan witnessed a very serious accident at an intersection in Cleveland, and decided something had to be done. So in 1923 he filed a patent for a traffic control device. While this was not the first Traffic Signal. this was the first that had a third "warning" option alerting drivers the STOP signal was coming soon.
Mr Morgan sadly passed away in 1963. But certainly left a mark in our daily lives.

She also goes down in history as the first social media influencer, in August of 1888, she took her patented vehicle and was the first person to drive an automobile a long distance (120 miles) and during that ride, she was able to test the Motorwagen and achieve 25 sales (including the company's first), not to mention the publicity during the trip. The 194 km route has now become known as the Bertha Benz Memorial Route in Mannheim, Germany.
Bertha passed in May of 1944 in Ladenburg, Germany. But her influence to the Damier-Benz legacy was assured.
