Congratulations to Mark Gwin, who was announced as the Principle Auto Nurse of the Year! Mark will receive car keys to four different Principle Auto vehicles throughout the year โ one BMW, one Volvo, one INFINITI and one MINI.
Previously a reporter and editor for a newspaper, Mark found his calling in healthcare after seeing the compassionate care provided to his grandfather. โIt made me realize just how powerful the 'kindness of strangers' could be,โ shared Mark. He wanted to make as meaningful an impact with strangers as he had telling their stories at the newspaper. So he looked to nursing.
Mark was nominated by a patient who said, โHe made something that was so scary for me a lot less scary! He made me feel like more than a patientโhe made me feel like family.โ Mark has proved that he can effectively communicate with varying audiences. With our pediatric patients, Mark is goofy and comforting. With parents, Mark is a guide to understanding what is happening to their child. With his team, Mark is a leader and reliable colleague to get things done.
Please join us in congratulating Mark for this outstanding achievement!
And the winner is...

While raising a toddler and a newborn, Diana started nursing school at the age of 26. As challenging as it was, itโs her greatest and proudest achievement. She has been working with dialysis patients for 24 years and loves it. She also loves training new nurses as itโs a way for her to give back her knowledge that so many great nurses taught her. The impact of peer learning is truly demonstrated when Diana sees the nurses she helped train thrive on their own.
Diana states that her inspiration was her family. Her parents made sacrifices to provide a better life for her, and she wanted nothing more than to make them proud. Initially, she chose nursing as a career because of its perpetual demand with unlimited job opportunities. After landing her first job, she knew she found her calling.
As clichรฉ as it sounds, helping others is her favorite part of being a nurse. Diana says, โAs a dialysis nurse, I see my patients three times a week. This constant interaction allows me the opportunity to empower my patients and their families with knowledge.โ To Diana, the most rewarding part of helping others is when her patients understand their disease and the plan of care and thatโs due to Dianaโs amazing communication skills.
Dianaโs supervisor, Hazel Tremor, says Diana is the embodiment of a good nurse as she possesses the most critical trait to succeed: outstanding communication skills. โDiana can solve any problem by effectively communicating with patients and families. She's an effective nurse who can not only fulfill but also anticipate patientsโ needs,โ says Hazel.
Thank you, Diana!

At the age of 21, Adrian was dominating the retail industry as a sales floor associate of 3 years, thinking about a full-time floor supervisor position when his boss asked him, โIs this really what you want to do for the rest of your life?โ He knew she was right, so he followed his intuition and applied for a job in a hospital the next day. He worked in transportation for a radiology department of a small hospital, working his way up to a Patient Care Analgesia (PCA) then cross-trained to read electrocardiograms (EKG). He is currently a nurse of two years at the University Health Systems Hospital and loving his job.
Adrian didnโt know it at the time, but when he was 4 years old, he found his calling. When his brother was born, Adrian would check his motherโs vital signs on her bedside chart and remark, โLooks like youโre doing okay, mom.โ He was so comfortable in the hospital, talking to nurses, and asking doctors questions like he worked there.
When asked his favorite part of the job he said, โthe best part is being given the opportunity to make a positive difference in someone's life even at their worst moment.โ He works with patients of all ages from juvenile to geriatric with the same intention: to help in any way he can, believing his job doesnโt stop after he leaves the patientโs bedside. Like the saying goes, whispers speak volumes just as Adrianโs work doesnโt go unnoticed. His supervisor notes that โHe is a great nurse โ compassionate and an awesome team player.โ
Thank you, Adrian!

Jayciโs nursing career began two years ago after she graduated from Tarleton State Universityโs BSN program. It was during the program she met her future mentor, Dr. Donna Owen, who taught her Critical Care in Adults class. Dr. Owen was able to bring out her passion for critical care and taught her what it means to stand behind those who may or may not temporarily be able to stand behind themselves. She currently works as a Charge Nurse in the Neurology Unit at University Health System (UHS).
Working in Neurology at a level 1 trauma center, Jayci sees patients on their worst days. Though it can be hard at times, she wants to make her patients comfortable, doing so with simple tasks such as always having a smile and a kind word. On the other side of neurology, Jayci gets to learn about varying neurological cases as no two brains are alike. Being able to diagnose from recognition of signs and symptoms to watching patients progress or even watching patients come to peace with their situation is the most rewarding part of her job. She loves learning not just for herself but for her patients. She wants to give the patient the care they deserve, and that involves knowing everything from how their ailment works to how to best support the patient emotionally to maintain an optimistic view of the situation. Her compassion is so evident to the patients and her supervisor who says, โShe is caring and always has a great attitude. Itโs no surprise to me that her patients also see this and have expressed such gratitude by nominating her. She always takes extra time to make patients feel special.โ
Jayciโs inspiration to become a nurse was her mother. As a nurse, her mother was always ready to help day or night, directing and navigating complex situations with complete elegance. The defining moment that inspired Jayci was during her senior year of high school when she got a panicked call from her best friend, saying her baby couldnโt breathe and her lips were turning blue. Luckily, Jayciโs mom knew exactly what to say to calm her down and instruct her what the next steps were. โI knew right then I wanted to be that person for someone else,โ says Jayci.
Thank you, Jayci!
