A new asphalt pavement sealer colored a light gray is being tested for both commercial and residential use. Because the lighter color absorbs and retains less heat, it’s considered environmentally friendly and particularly desirable in areas with lots of sun and heat.
Keep in mind that crack filling should be done prior to any seal coating applications. If cracks are left unattended, water is able to penetrate to the base, which will soak and swell the limestone and eventually destroy its strength and load bearing capabilities.
The first bituminous mixtures were produced in the U.S. in the late 1860s and used for mostly sidewalks and crosswalks. The first true asphalt pavement nationwide was laid in 1870 in front of City Hall in Newark, New Jersey.
There are a number of benefits to using asphalt paving for your driveway, versus concrete. Asphalt paving is less prone to frost heaves than concrete, it can be re-layered, and it is cheaper.
It’s important to remember that an important part of asphalt installation involves sealing it three days after application. This is different from when concrete can be sealed because asphalt typically has to finish curing before a sealant can be applied.
