We understand the importance of seeing loved ones while they are receiving care, and know the value visitors bring to our patients. The well-being of our patients and caregivers is our top priority, especially during the current COVID-19 surge. Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Holy Family Hospital are taking steps to ensure we have capacity to care for our community. Effective today, we will reschedule some elective surgeries and procedures. We will review each surgery and patient need on a case-by-case basis and work with patients to reschedule their procedure. This action is directly related to conserving critical care beds and staff as we care for our highest numbers of patients with COVID-19 to date. If you have a procedure scheduled at either hospital and have questions, please contact your doctor's office.
Caring for patients with COVID is challenging, but it's also an opportunity for our teams to innovate and challenge themselves to become even better. We are proud of the extraordinary work they continue to do for our community.

Sydney received the COVID vaccine-19 from her mother, Julie, who was volunteering at the caregiver vaccine clinic on Jan. 12 at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. Both are registered nurses with Providence. Julie, a nurse in our ICU who has been caring for the sickest patients with COVID-19, said the opportunity to give her daughter the vaccine was a moment of hope. As a parent, she said it’s her duty to protect her child in giving the vaccine, she felt that fulfillment.
Sydney said she was relieved, thankful and excited to receive the vaccine from her mom — for a true “mama bear moment.”

Patients often give thanks for the care they received by making a donation to Providence Health Care Foundation in honor of a caregiver. A recent gift was made in honor of two nurses in the cardiac unit of Sacred Heart Medical Center, Donavon Garner and Sharon Ziegler.
“They were both so kind…they welcomed me to their floor and into their care with compassion and caring. They helped me to feel comfortable and cared for at a time when my health was very uncertain. I appreciated all they did for me, which was a lot. Thank you!"

Feb. 18 UPDATE: We again have to move all the appointments. All Friday afternoon appointments will be rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25, in the afternoon at the same time. Please watch for an email with more details and be sure to check your spam/junk emails. Thank you.
Please note, if you have a second-dose vaccine appointment at Holy Family Hospital scheduled for Thurs. Feb. 18 or Fri. Feb. 19, please be aware:
Shifting perspective is one of the building blocks of cultivating resilience. The lens through which we look at the world has a big impact on how we experience our lives. You can intentionally shift your attention away from stressors, at least for brief periods, by practicing “ZiZo”: Zoom in on the present moment or zoom out to think long-term, depending on the stress you want to shift away from.
Due to weather-related vaccine shipment delays, we are postponing all second-dose vaccine appointments at Holy Family Hospital tomorrow, Feb. 17. All appointments will be rescheduled to Mon. Feb. 22, at the same time as your original appointment. We realize this is an inconvenience.
Weather has caused shipping delays across the country. We DO have the vaccine inventory confirmed, but we have not received the vaccines we need for tomorrow. If you have an appointment on Feb. 18, please watch your email for updates as we will provide updates tomorrow afternoon.
Please note there are no health implications in delaying the vaccine by five days. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to get our community vaccinated.

Please help us celebrate Bethany White, a Providence supply chain manager who went the extra mile, quite literally, to ensure a patient received excellent care.
Earlier in the COVID pandemic, a hearing-impaired patient was struggling to communicate with our staff due to their masks. At that time, we did not yet have masks with a clear space that show the wearer’s mouth – which can be critical to those who read lips.
Bethany called all over and within hours, she tracked down the specialty masks at a facility in Ritzville. She personally drove to pick them up and ensure the team could use them with the hearing impaired patient.
Bethany lives our Mission each day and we are proud to recognize her commitment to our patients. She received the Exemplary Performance Award, which recognizes Providence caregivers who go above and beyond.

Please help us celebrate International Women's Day by celebrating the incredible women who lead our Providence ministries.
Providence’s heritage story begins with a group of strong and determined women, known as the Sisters of Providence, who embraced leadership roles to carry out our Mission of providing care to others. Fast forward 165 years and we still see women serving in many leadership positions across Providence.
For International Women’s Day, we asked some female leaders for their perspective on success and leadership. We'd love to hear from you, too. What female leaders have inspired you? Have you had a mentor who helped you get where you are today?
These deviled eggs are an excellent source of protein and are much less devilish because we've replaced half the egg yolks with low-fat cottage cheese.

Virtual Bloomsday Training Clinic--Week 1
Every step counts for Don Hitzel. Luckily, he doesn’t actually have to count them all. The treadmill at St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute does that for him.
At 101-years-old, Don is a regular at cardiac rehab classes at St. Luke’s. Providence doctors helped him through heart trauma, now St. Luke’s caregivers are supporting his next steps.
It should come as no surprise that Don is an inspiration to his classmates and caregivers who work with him. But, it’s more than just his fine footwork.
Don’s legacy starts with the steps he took decades ago. He is a World War II veteran who served in the South Pacific doing air transport command.
It is an honor working with Don and we want to thank him for his service.
You can read more about this charming centenarian in The Spokesman-Review or watch him in action on KREM 2 News.

What advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time one year ago when the pandemic was just starting?
That’s the question 4 News Now reporter Maher Kawash posed to some caregivers who have cared for patients with COVID at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.
One year ago, Providence caregivers began treating some of the first patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Washington. Sacred Heart Medical Center is one of 10 hospitals in the country with a specialized unit to treat infectious disease, so our teams were prepared.
But, this virus tested us. It tested years of advanced medical training. It tested the very heart of our community.
Tonight, on 4 News Now, look back on what we've learned through this pandemic, and why we're hopeful about the future.

Elaine Couture has served the Providence Mission for more than 30 years. Elaine currently leads Providence as the regional chief executive for Washington and Montana. As we previously announced, she’ll be retiring from her role this May.
In a recent interview with the Spokane Journal of Business, Elaine reflected on her career, including the people who inspired her, and what the future holds.
She is so proud of the people of Providence.
“Their work inspires me every single day. I’m very proud that I was able to lead and work with such a fine group of people,” Elaine said.
Please join us in congratulating Elaine on a life of service. We are excited to support her in this next phase of life as she continues to give back to our community in new ways and gets to spend more time with her family, including her six grandchildren.

Young athletes can bring their ‘A game’ every day by following guidelines that help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Providence and St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute athletic trainer Scott Wardian says our new norm right now includes keeping supplies to yourself.
Don’t share water bottles or towels. You can share in the joy of big wins, but try not to share germs. Even when you're celebrating, avoid giving your teammate a high-five. Find other ways to celebrate each other.
Together, we can bench COVID-19.
Providence is proud to offer exceptional care, which includes recognizing that the closeness of a loved one is part of the healing journey.
As we see local cases of COVID-19 slowly drop, we remain vigilant against the virus. We know that it has been difficult to be in the hospital without friends and family.
As of Wednesday March 24, we are altering our visitor policy to allow one adult visitor a day per inpatient. We are also allowing two adults to be with laboring moms while they are in the hospital. The Children's Hospital policy remains the same with two adult visitors per inpatient child.
Please note we still cannot allow visitors for patients with COVID.
Please remember that all visitors who meet our restrictions will continue to be screened and must follow masking and safety rules. Visitors who exhibit cold/flu like symptoms or fever will be asked to return home.
Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center has the ulti-mutt security team.
Providence K9 Supervisor Pat McKenna and Sarge founded the program in 2019. At the time, they were the first and only hospital K9 security team in the state of Washington.
Not long after they started patrolling the halls of the hospital to keep patients and caregivers safe, K9 Dex and Officer Corey Anderson joined the team. Corey served as a Providence security officer prior to joining the K9 team.
Dex is a Belgian Malinois with a heart of gold and fondness for beef jerky.
Corey just became a certified instructor, which is an elite certification allowing him to teach other K9 handlers.
Please help us thank these good boys for their faithful service. You’ll want to sniff around on our social media Wednesday for a huge announcement!
