Ice dams take form when warm air in the attic heats the roof and melts the snow. The melted snow collects on unheated eaves and starts freezing, creating ice dams and potentially resulting in water damage to your roof and home. Make sure your eaves stay snow-free this winter! https://bit.ly/2FhuiwX #PuroClean #CentennialRestoration #PuroCleanCentennial #WaterDamage #EmergencyRestoration #IceDams
FUN FACT: The Eiffel Tower can grow more than six inches during the summer, the temperature makes the iron expand! WORDS: Cat 1 – Cat 1 refers a category of water damage. Cat 1 water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose substantial risk. Examples of Cat 1 water sources can include, but are not limited to: broken water supply lines; tub or sink overflows with no contaminants; appliance malfunctions involving water-supply lines; broken toilet tanks, and toilet bowls that do not contain contaminants or additives. However, once clean water leaves the exit point, it might not remain clean once it contacts other surfaces or materials. Pack Outs – We perform "pack outs" when a homeowners' contents have been damaged and need to be cleaned. We wrap delicates, box contents, and bring them back to our shop to clean and store until their home is ready for delivery. Autumn Begins! – Its September 23rd, welcome to fall(plus one day)!! It’s true, homeowners’ insurance provides coverage for damage that is sudden and accidental. But flood damage, no matter the source of the water, is NOT covered by standard homeowners’ policies. Did you know…… In Spanish the word “esposa” means both wives and handcuffs. Gentlemen , I’m sure that comes as no surprise! LOL! Words: Crawlspace – The enclosed ground area bounded by foundation walls located beneath an elevated floor, usually not excavated and finished, that allows access to utilities and other services. This is in contrast to basements and slabs on grade. These are generally confined spaces that water can end up gathering in when there is water damage. In dirt crawlspaces, it is usually recommended that vapor barriers are installed. Drywall – Drywall (also known as plasterboard, wallboard, gypsum panel, sheet rock, or gypsum board) is a panel made of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) with or without additives and normally pressed between a facer and a backer. It is used to make interior walls and ceilings. Drywall construction became prevalent as a speedier alternative to traditional lath and plaster. We have the technology to dry drywall in place by either detaching the baseboards or using a wall cavity drying system that utilizes hoses and smaller holes in the drywall to dry inside. This decreases the rebuild costs for claims. ACM – Acm stands for Asbestos Containing Material. If we need to remove more than 32 square feet of drywall or flooring, by Colorado state law, we have to have the materials tested for asbestos. The report will come back saying it is ACM, if any material contains one or more percent of asbestos. If this is the case, we refer the work to an asbestos abatement company. A leaky toilet can waste as much as 100 gallons of water each day. Pro Tip: Test your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank and watch for a few minutes. FUN FACT: You can hear a blue whales heart beat from more than 2 miles away. It weighs almost 400 pounds and is about the size of a piano! WORDS: Woven Carpet – Woven carpet is made on a vertical loom. This construction has as a foundation of a crisscross or interlacing of strong yarns called "foundation yarns". The foundation yarns are identified by their direction. The vertical yarns are "warp yarns" running the length of the carpet, and the horizontal yarns are "weft yarns" running across the width. A weft goes from right to left. Yarn tufts are tied onto this system of foundation yarns to generate a stunning array of patterns and colors. Various knotting techniques are used. Some popular knotting techniques are the Turkish Knot and the Persian Knot. Laminate Floors – Laminated flooring can resist impact damage and scratching based on its abrasion class (ac) rating. Because fiberboard is highly hygroscopic, any water that gets past the photographic layer can absorb and distort edges, causing swelling and delamination. Some grades of laminate add higher resin content, waxes and oils to slow moisture absorption. Most laminate product maintenance instructions discourage wet mopping or "submersion cleaning." Therefore, water intrusions can quickly lead to deterioration. Laminate products do not respond well to the vacuum floor drying systems (wood floor rescue mats) used on other hard surface floors. Often laminates are installed with a thin cushion material and, on concrete, a three-mil plastic vapor barrier underneath. When significant water penetrates under laminate flooring, it must be removed for subfloor drying Classes of Water Damage – The term "Class" of water loss is the initial determination of the amount of water in a loss, and the likely or anticipated rate of evaporation. The basis for the distinction between the Classes of water intrusion are: the amount of wet materials, the moisture content of the materials involved, the rate of evaporation of the materials and where the materials are located within the structure. This information should be gathered during the moisture inspection of the affected areas. There are 4 classes of water damage. Fun fact…..artichokes are (thistle) flowers that just haven’t bloomed yet. WORDS: Complications – A "complication" is generally any condition that arises after the start of work that causes or necessitates a change in the scope of activities. Some complications we come across are mold, asbestos in old tiles and drywall compounds, lead paint, pest infestations, unsafe structure, etc.... ASD – ASD stands for Applied Structural Drying, and is considered the “masters degree” in drying structures/ houses. Scott, Jake, and David all have this certification from the IICRC. Policy Holder – An individual or corporation who qualifies for and holds an insurance policy. Insurance companies, via the adjusters, determine what damages are covered by and paid for by the insurance company. However, we work for the policy holder (home owner) and will do what they want, as long as they understand that if they want us to do anything beyond the scope of what insurance will cover, they will be responsible for payment for that "extra" work. Did you know……… Marie Curies notebooks are still dangerously radioactive from the 1890’s. The mother of modern physics was known for her work with radioactive materials and the discovery of elements like polonium and radium. Unfortunately, her research took a hefty toll on her health, leading to aplastic anemia, which caused her death. The exposure to radioactivity didn't just affect her, it also affected most of her belongings, including her clothes, furniture, and books. Now, more than a century later, her notebooks have to be stored in a lead box, as they are still radioactive and will be for another 1,500 years! WORDS: Storage Facility – We have a shop in Centennial on Jordan Road where we can store insured’s contents while awaiting reconstruction of their homes Englewood – Incorporated in 1903, Englewood is a full-service city 20 minutes south of downtown Denver, where residents and businesses benefit from major transportation corridors and a central location. The city is known for its small-town charm and its proximity to a major metropolitan area. Englewood is the fourth most populous city in Arapahoe County and, in 2010, was the twenty-third most populous city in Colorado. Insulation – a material or substance that is used to stop heat, electricity, or sound from going into or out of something. We usually can dry insulation by either detaching a baseboard and sending air up behind the drywall, or we can use wall cavity drying hoses to get air behind there. If it doesn't dry, or is affected by category 3 water, we then remove the insulation. The effectiveness of insulation is measured using a scale of R-values. The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance to heat transfer. Your brain consists of about one billion nerve cells, or neurons. Each neuron connects to about a thousand other neurons for a total of over a trillion connections. Memories are stored through these connections, so the upshot is that your brain can store around 2.5 petabytes of memory. That's the equivalent of leaving your DVR running 24 hours a day for over 300 years! Unfortunately, scientists have yet to determine why, with all that memory capacity, you still can't remember where you put your car keys. WORDS: Project Manager – A project manager interacts with customers, assesses damage, delegates tasks to the technicians, updates adjusters and homeowners, tracks performance and progress of the mitigation, and communicates with the estimator regarding all work being completed.He/she is also responsible for ensuring appropriate management, customer and supplier involvement throughout the life of the project. Quick Dry System – Our PuroClean QuickDry System™ uses applied psychrometric science - a proven process that properly manages dehumidification and temperature to most effectively and efficiently facilitate evaporation - drying! High Capacity Air Movers create a vortex, similar to the motion of a tornado. A Low-Grain Refrigerant Dehumidifier draws in cool, wet air and blows out warm, dry air. Our PuroClean QuickDry System™ helps ensure the best possible outcome. We can save almost everything: drywall, wood, carpets and most contents! We measure the moisture content of materials, monitor and log progress so we know the actual drying time and ensure restoration to the appropriate dry standard. Certain conditions may require additional drying time and/or the removal of some items or materials. Negative Air Scrubber – An air scrubber is an AFD (Air Filtration Device) that is used to filter and recirculate air to reduce particulates during demolition and cleaning processes. A negative air scrubber creates a pressure differential by moving air from or into a contained area. Did you know…..Baby sea otters can’t swim. Their moms will wrap them in pieces of kelp while they hunt until the buoyant pups learn how to paddle around on their own. A raft of otters will also hold hands while they sleep so they don't drift apart! WORDS: Michael Crothers – Mike is one of our two marketers. He has been a long time friend and neighbor of Scotts and loves his dog racecar, sports and having a nice relaxing day out on the patio for Taco Tuesday! Equilibrium – A theoretical state in which moisture no longer moves, temperature no longer changes and air no longer moves. Equilibrium is not the goal in restorative drying, but the forces that drive towards his theoretical state are the same forces used to remove abnormal moisture from wet building components. Carpet and Pad – Everyone knows what carpet and carpet pad are, but the homeowners insurance dictates if we can use weight-assisted extraction and in-place drying for water damage, or if we are required to cut the carpet pad out and dry the carpet. If the carpet pad has a vapor barrier (pet pad), it will have to be removed because that type of pad will not allow drying to take place. Did you know……humans can smell the chemical compound that makes us aware of “the scent of rain” better than a shark can smell blood. Words: Home Owner – For most home owners, when they have damage in their home, it is the first time they’ve experienced it. Many can feel overwhelmed with dealing with the loss and be emotional if they have lost valuables. We work hard to explain the whole process clearly with them and reassure them that their best interests are always in mind. Although the insurance company pays for claims, ultimately, the home owner is in charge of their remediation. If the homeowner doesn’t want to follow protocol, we have Release of Liability forms for them to sign, detailing what needs to happen and that the home owner is refusing to let us do it. If they want us to do more than the insurance company pays for, we can do it as long as they understand they are responsible for payment of services. Plastic/Rubber Residue – Residues from burned plastic, synthetic rubbers and other polymers tend to burn vigorously at low temperatures, producing a large lightweight particulate. These residues smear or smudge easily and tend to be black in color. A small quantity of plastic can produce a surprisingly large volume of smoke that can travel long distances and leave deposits in heavy concentrations throughout the structure. Smoke residue from plastic fires may be highly corrosive to metal and exposed chrome trim. Because of a high degree of ionization (magnetic attraction), these smoke particles are attracted to other materials, synthetics . Plastic particulates also readily connect in chains forming heavy "smoke webs" often visible at ceiling corners and "smoke tags or streamers" often found on hanging fixtures, such as light fixtures, curtain rods, etc.. Inject-A-Dry System – This system is used to dry inside walls without doing “flood cuts”. Holes are drilled or made, and then hoses connected to a machine force air into the wall cavity. This reduces rebuild and mitigation costs on a claim. The holes can be easily repaired at a cheaper rate than replacing large areas of drywall that has been cut out. Did you know…….Colorado is the only state in history to ever turn down the Olympics. Words: Deodorization – A deodorant is a chemical or gas that covers, modifies, removes or destroys odor causing agents. There are 4 basic principles of deodorizing in fire and smoke situations: 1) First step is to remove or contain the source of contamination or debris. 2) Clean the source area. 3) Re-create the conditions of penetration with the appropriate odor counteractant. 4) If building materials are still structurally sound after removing the charred areas, then they may be sealed with an appropriate vapor barrier. The most difficult odor to address is the “psychological” odor that people who have experienced fire feel they keep smelling although the odor has been removed. Sporicidin – Sporicidin Disinfectant Solution is an EPA registered disinfectant solution recommended for use in hospitals, and medical, dental, and veterinary clinics. This OSHA compliant disinfectant cleaner is ideal for cleaning/restoration, in cases of mold, water, fire, sewage remediation, and trauma clean up. Oxygen-Starved Residue – Oxygen-Starved (Wet Smoke) Residue is the most difficult to remedy. It comes from smoldering, cook, or oxygen-starved fires. Due to its being slow burning, the smoke is not driven by strong convection currents from the heat of the fire. The incomplete combustion releases solvents, varnishes and other aerosols, which can soften, penetrate and stain finished surfaces. The resulting particles tend to smear easily and are somewhat larger. Wet smoke residue moves slowly and has time to work its way into crevices and enclosed areas that normally would not be contaminated by a faster burning fire. Unfinished wood and fabrics may absorb these residues and then entrap them. The odor that is produced may be extremely pungent and the acid formed when combined with moisture may cause many surfaces to yellow. Damage in this category of smoke often requires replacement. Did you know…….Rats multiply so quickly that in a span of 18 months, two rats can have over a million descendants. WORDS: Arapahoe County – Arapahoe County is one of the 64 counties in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2010 census, the population was 572,003, making it the third-most populous county in Colorado. The county seat is Littleton, and the most populous city is Aurora. The county was named for the Arapaho Native American tribe who once lived in the region. Immediate Response – Whenever we get a call or assignment, we immediately respond and call the customer to find out the date of loss, source of loss and if it's water, if a plumber has fixed the problem or the water is turned off), what the conditions are, what the conditions were at their worst, and what year the house was built. From this we can determine if emergency mitigation is needed or if an appointment can be set up during business hours. Customer Service – We pride ourselves on taking care of our customers!
