Quail Park of Oro Valley Resident of the Month
Joe H.
If history has anything to teach us, it is that it has the ability to shape and mold mankind. It has the ability to produce molds, martyrs, heroes, villains, leaders and historians. History has shaped Mr. Joe Hardy.
If you had never met Mr. Hardy and saw him walking toward you, you would know right away that he was someone important. If you heard him speak for the first time, you would know that he is a dignitary. If you had not heard his story, you would know that his story was an important one. Joe embodies the spirit of a warrior and exemplifies dignity. His voice demands respect, and his speech lets you know that he is intelligent. Life has shaped this man and given us his story. Let us thank him for his story and salute him for his military service in the U.S. Army and sacrifice for this country.
Joe Hardy was born in Chicago, IL and later moved to Tucson, AZ in 1948. Joe had a brief teenage marriage that fortunately ended after one year with no offspring. He then went on to the University of Arizona and graduated in 1968. Joe decided to join the Army through the ROTC program while in college. Mr. Hardy served a two-year stint, one year in the states and one year in Vietnam. During his time in Vietnam, Joe was part of several self-help projects designed to help the locals in Vietnam. Halfway through his service, he was reassigned to work in the Mekong Delta where he and his Company built a major road through a rice paddy and the jungle. As he recalled his time in Vietnam, Joe’s eyes glazed over as he remembered the many attacks on his Company while they were there.
After his military service, Joe went on to earn his MBA from the University of Arizona. It was there he met the love of his life, Joyce. Together they had two sons, Tim and Scott.
Joe’s favorite music is Classical and a variety of ’60s music. His favorite foods are beef stew, steak and Mexican. As a former golfer, Joe still enjoys watching golf on TV as well as basketball and football. He is also a rabid AZ Wildcats fan! Did you know that Joe is a thespian? He can recite several Shakespearean poems from memory!
When asked if there were any interesting things we should know about him, Joe’s smile turned into a stare. In a deep monotone voice, he shook his head up and down and said, “there were a lot of close calls in Vietnam and I came through unscathed”. If there is something reflective of his personality, Joe sums it all up when he said, he wants his neighbors to know that he enjoys meeting and conversing with all of them.
Thank You Mr. Joe Hardy for Your Story and Your Service.
Continue Honoring Our Veterans.

Does Santa have a license to drive a sleigh?
I was thinking of this just yesterday
Could DMV provide me with one?
I’m sure driving a sleigh would be such fun
Mine will have wheels, no reindeer need obey
and I will follow all the rules of the highway

I once attempted to learn to ski
But quickly discovered, it was not for me
On my first experience I hit a tree,
As time went on I grew more at ease,
Until I skied off a slope, and broke both my knees
Then soon I realized the accidents I will dodge
By only sipping toddies at the Lodge

Resident of the Month
Janet D.
What better way to begin the new year than with fireworks? Our January, resident of the month is Janet D., and she is the equivalent of fireworks. She is dynamic and spirited. She speaks with sincerity and “tells it like it is”! She is sensitive, loving, and honest. She has a story to tell and when you get to know her, she will tell that story like only one can who resides from New York.
Like many others that grew up in Brooklyn, NY, not to mention in the 1930’s, Janet “holds no bars”. There is a certain rapport that one has with another, when you are a native of New York. You develop the ability to discern right from wrong. You develop the ability to represent life’s truths in a sensational fashion. Her story telling is quite sensational, again, as only one from Brooklyn, NY can tell it.
While conducting this interview, Janet’s beautiful Hazel eyes pierces the soul, as one brow furrows lower than the other, her lips either curl upward, meaning she is delighted, or curl to one side, meaning that something is afoot. Her New York accent gives her character. She drops the R’s turning forget into “fuhget” and girl into “goil”. Her high gliding vowels turn words like talk into “tawk” and caught into “cawt”. She set the scene as she described every detail to the questions asked. Her conversation was exiting and tale full, and at the end of it all, there was lessons to be learned.
After the beginning of a delightful delightful conversation, bits and pieces of Janet’s life began to emerge. Janet was a clerk for a brokerage house on Wall Street. She married John in 1955 and had 3 kids, Janet, Steve, and Kathleen and raised them while working on Wall Street. Now days, Janet loves to read, play bingo and point (Gel Point). Her favorite type of music is Swing, which is fitting, because she loves to dance. Her favorite food is Italian and German. Her favorite hobby used to be golf, water aerobics, baking and sewing, when she used to make her own pants and dresses.
When asked if there were any interesting things that we should know about her, Janet said, “Not really”! “I find it hard to adjust to living here and everyone has been very nice, but I’m still home sick.” Her statement is understandable, considering that Janet is very personable and judging by her conversation about her time growing up, it seems that she was always surrounded by family and friends. She talked a lot about her family growing up in Brooklyn.
She lived with her family in a six-family house in Ridge wood, Queens, Brooklyn where everyone minded their own business. She said she enjoyed her time there. She could hop across the street to the stock exchange where her husband worked.
As Janet began to reminisce about the neighborhood, her New York accent became stronger and her story became much more personal and interesting. She describes her neighborhood in a way that sounds like a scene from a movie. She was remembering her time growing up in Brooklyn and having to learn the German language as a kid to get service from some of the stores where she lived. “Living in Brooklyn, we were close to an Italian neighborhood and they had the best restaurants and delis to drive down and eat.”
Janet has always had a social life and her stories continued. Janet’s brows and lips continues to shift with each story. In fact, the conversation turned toward Janet’s family and social life growing up. Janet loved to party when she was young, she said, “I love Swing!” “From a teen, at outdoor parties, we would dance and meet people in Brooklyn.” Her and her friend used to go to a church party and would always get home late and when asked about it, they would always tell her father that they came in on time when he asked. She said that her father always knew when she would come home late, and they understood how he knew when they were lying. He told them later, about how he knew they were lying, because he used to check their toothbrushes to see if they were wet and check the light bulbs to see if they were warm. Her father was a New York City Policeman and was very strict.
Janet maintained friendships throughout her adulthood and as she began to tell her next story, she turned her eyes to one side and then forward again, her lips curled upward, and her brows went up. She remembers playing gulf once a week with her friends and drinking coffee after. She jokingly tells a story about their experiences and highlights a funny incident while golfing. Her brows shifted again, and her lips curled to one side. She said that the men hated when they would play golf and never wanted to play with them. Once, a male golfer approached them on the course to tell them how badly the clubs were positioned in their golf bag. He repositioned the clubs, and after positioning them the way he saw fit, the man said, “now that’s the way a golf bag should look.” In her New York accent, Janet said, "as soon as she walked away, I put them back the way I had them.”
Janet has always been driven and determined to do what she sets her mind too. After her children grew older and they received their college degree, Janet decided to go back to school to complete her college degree. She said that her husband paid all the bills and since he didn’t complete high school and she had time on her hands she would get a college degree. She always wanted her college degree, so she discussed her idea with her husband, John, and he was in full support of her getting a college degree. Janet finally completed her liberal arts degree at the age 45.
Janet broke from her story in excitement and showed me the artwork she was working on. It was a “Mandala”; An outlined picture of a Siamese cat that was partially filled with color. The colors she used were bold and uniquely hers, which captured her strong personality. She says she’s always had a flair for art and now that she has plenty of time, she has decided to explore her artistic talent. Janet’s conversation and demeanor are inviting. Her enthusiasm is invigorating and her outlook on life allows her to continue to try new things. She said that she is grateful to be able to live here at Quail Park and is very flattered that she has been chosen to be January’s resident of the Month.

A New Year is always full of promise
And I am not a doubting Thomas
I cheer the holiday with food and drinks
Awaiting 2021 with snacks and clinks
But I’m aware that when the ball descends
I will surely have to make amends
For the many pounds that I have gained
In merriment, unrestrained...
Widely extending my growing torso
Which makes me appear like last year…….. only more so!!

On idioms,
I’m confused as to what to choose?
Ignorance is bliss... or…. live and learn?
Do we have the wisdom to discern?
Is a little learning a dangerous thing?
Let's explore this further... give it a fling
And can we believe the cat was killed by curiosity?
Or is there another reason for this atrocity?
Only a penny for my thoughts would they spare?
I find that chintzy, and unfair
I think addressing these matters which need to be said,
Is the best thing since sliced bread!
And as all good things come to those who wait,
We would also have some cool ideas to debate!

She wasn’t just a pretty face
At the game of poker she was an ace

Of losing hands that she could bluff
And with a poker face, she would so embrace
As billiard games and practice continues, Earl teaches anyone willing to try. #Billiards #billiardstournament

She wasn’t just a pretty face
At the game of poker she was an ace
She couldn’t get enough
Of losing hands that she could bluff
And with a poker face, she would so embrace
As billiard games and practice continues, Earl teaches anyone willing to try. #Billiards #billiardstournament

Looking to buy a Valentine’s gift?
Make it expensive, nothing makeshift
No roses, or candy
How about a fifth of Napoleon brandy?
To give your gift a proper lift!!
The Quail Park book club met in the library to discuss their new read entitled, “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek”. #bookclub #read

Do you know my friend Maisie?
Some people think she’s lazy
But I for one, think she’s not,
Just a regular job she has boycott
But for chills and thrills, she’s simply crazy
Do you know Mercedes Benz?
That girl is one of my dearest friends
She drives a Chevy, not the car you think
And you can’t say she's living "in the pink"
As her jobs depend on many odds and ends

I don’t wish to make you squirm, but...
Do you have an ear worm?
It’s not an ache, or something fake
Simply a tune you can’t seem to shake
This catchy music keeps on staying
Long after it quit playing
And you are not alone
With this stuck song syndrome
But don’t for a moment fret,
I’ve been humming for hours
"Stand By Your Man," with Tammy Wynette!
With entertainment, green beer, corned beef and cabbage, good friendship and a leprechaun as the host, St. Patrick’s Day at Quail Park was a blast! #stpatricksday
