HELEN GEORGIA IS OPEN!!!
As many of you know, the City of Helen was affected by flooding a couple of weeks ago from Tropical Storm Alberto. The below message is from Helen City Hall:
"The City has had numerous calls asking if the City is opened for business. We are happy to announce that the majority of the town was unaffected by the recent flooding of the Chattahoochee River. The river is inside its banks again, and everyone has done a tremendous job cleaning up the affected areas.
All roads within the City are currently open including Georgia Highway 75/17 which runs from Helen to Hiawassee. The downtown district was unaffected by the high waters, and businesses are opened and ready for tourists.
Others have called concerning the news reports about high bacteria levels in the Chattahoochee River. Please know that these warnings are NOT for the Helen area (this has been confirmed by the EPD). The Chattahoochee River in Helen is not experiencing high bacteria levels, and the water is safe for play. We will continue to keep you posted as more information is available.
Again, the City and the Chattahoochee River are open and ready for you to come and enjoy them."
If you have any questions please contact the Helen Welcome Center at 1-800-858-8027 or info@helenga.org.

History of Helen, Georgia
For those of you who want to know how Helen came to be, well here is the scoop.
Helen, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Chattahoochee River is a recreation of an alpine village with cobblestone alleys and old world towers. This Northeast Georgia village has a rich history linked to the Cherokee Indians and their burial mounds as well as early settlers who arrived in the early 1900s to mine for gold and cut virgin timber for a thriving lumber industry.
Now celebrating its 49th year as a mountain community with a touch of Bavaria, Helen's evolution into an alpine village began in 1968 when a group of local businessmen met to discuss ways to revitalize their town. They approached a nearby artist friend who had been stationed in Germany. He sketched the buildings, added gingerbread trim, details and colors to the buildings giving an Alpine look to the entire town. In January 1969, business owners and local carpenters began turning ideas into reality and all downtown stores were renovated. Facades of buildings were painted with scenes of Bavaria and North Georgia, mirroring the migration of early settlers. In 2002 alone $1.2 million was spent on improvements in the downtown area.
Helen has accomplished much, it has created a new town and industry, providing jobs for more people and boosting the economy of the entire area. Helen also commemorates its historic past when the early settlers came to this remote area. A village with mountain heritage and a touch of Bavaria. Helen has created a unique experience for its visitor.
So, this is the story of Helen, the miracle of a small remote mountain community that revitalized itself in various ways throughout several centuries and that today hosts nearly 2 million visitors each year.
