"The basket is Cherokee, probably made some time between 1900-1940... The river cane use on the rim was prior to most weavers switching to using white oak on the outer rim in the mid 20th century... Beautifully Potted 10" Vase with a Thick White Glaze, Brown Pitted Speckles & Subtle Craquelure by West Coast American Craft Movement Ceramic Artist Eric Norstad (1924 - 2013)... Norstad was an award-winning potter & architect who worked primarily on the west coast of the United States. Norstad credits artists Peter Voulkos, Bernard Leach & his parents as influences, as well as clean, functional Scandinavian design of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s... He graduated from the University of Oregon with degree in architecture with a minor in ceramics. In order to subsidize his career as an aspiring architect in Seattle, Wa, Norstad began making stoneware pottery. In 1957 Norstad was the recipient of a The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant, which enabled him to build a small kiln & set up a pottery operation in his family home. The rest, as they say, is history... Norstad's career enjoyed commercial success beginning in the 1960's during the American Craft Movement & flourished for decades until retirement in 1998. His pots are in the permanent collection at the Portland Art Museum. Norstad's first one-man show was held in 1954 at the Contemporary Crafts Gallery in Portland, Oregon. Oakland Museum of California has an Eric Norstad decorative plate in their collection. I’m absolutely in love with this sweet little 17th century bucket that came from an extremely interesting Waverly estate!!! Wooden buckets and tubs, which are made the same way as barrels but without fitted lids, were at one time used for all kinds of day-to-day tasks, from carrying milk to washing cloths... Craftsmen who make wooden barrels, buckets & tubs are called coopers. The word is most likely derived from the Latin word for vat, "cupa." In New England, coopers arrived with the first English settlers in the 1620s. Their work was essential to commerce and daily life. Historical Snapshots February 1 at 8:29 AM · Maggie Lena Walker, the daughter of a former slave and cook, was the first woman to charter a bank in the United States in 1902. The bank offered loans and mortgages to black residents of Richmond, Virginia who were otherwise denied service by white-owned banks. A year later she started a department store allowing black customers to shop with dignity: To enter through the main doors instead of a side entrance, to try on clothing before buying, and to eat at lunch counters. Her store displayed clothing on brown-skinned mannequins and hired exclusively black women to work as clerks. Later the same year, Walker utilized her newspaper to urge Richmond residents to boycott the city’s segregated streetcar system. Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center February 3 at 8:00 PM · Herman Asenap (Grey Foot) was a respected tribal leader. He was a skilled interpreter for the Post Oak Mission and the U.S. Indian Service. He shared that his father was a Mexican captive who was believed taken as a young child in the mid-1860's. Herman's mother was a full blood Kwahada Comanche named Tahchockah who was born around 1858. Similar in a way to the history of Herman Asenap's father, the remarkable Comanche elder Herkeyah (Carrying Her Sunshade) was captured as a young girl in old Mexico. She had also lived an incredible and fascinating life as a Comanche captive and Comanche woman. With regard to Herkeyah's memory of an intense encounter between Herman's mother Tahchockah and the Tonkawas, she recounted that his mother was running away from several Tonkawa scouts who were in high pursuit of her. In the tail of her horse, Tahchockah effectively tied a knot and drove her horse into the water. As the Tonkawas were closing in, she held strongly onto the tail and made her way safely across the flooded creek. In 1902 this brick chimney protruded proudly from the top of our old Odd Fellows Hall located on #antiquerow here in #oldsellwood, soaring higher than anything man made in the neighborhood, but it has been hidden for many a day now, all but forgotten to time... Some day we hope to breathe new life into this old smoke vessel by lining it with heavy Stainless Steel and venting a high efficiency, EPA approved, clean burning wood stove through it so we can bring unparalleled warmth & comfort to our shop down below... History worth remembering... Historical Snapshots February 23 at 11:02 PM · In 1887, Elizabeth Cochran Seaman, better known as Nellie Bly, was 23-years-old, and an inspiring journalist. Upon the request of an editor from the New York World newspaper, she was to fake insanity to be admitted into a New York insane asylum, where she could then conduct first-hand research. After checking into a boarding home for women, Nellie feigned insanity, was arrested, and sent to an asylum that typically housed poor immigrants. She stayed there for ten days until the editors were able to get her a release. Speaking of her experience, she said, “What, excepting torture, would produce insanity quicker than this treatment?...I would like the expert physicians who are condemning me for my action, which has proven their ability, to take a perfectly sane and healthy woman, shut her up and make her sit from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. on straight-back benches, do not allow her to talk or move during these hours, give her no reading and let her know nothing of the world or its doings, give her bad food and harsh treatment, and see how long it will take to make her insane. Two months would make her a mental and physical wreck.” She published Ten Days in a Mad-House, which would help drive more funding and change in NYC insane asylums. About a year later, based on the book Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne, Nellie became famous for attempting to travel the world in less than eighty days. Alzira Canuto‎Archeology & Civilizations March 4 at 9:01 AM · This is the corner of a hand-stitched sail made in the 1800s. The craftsmanship and quality of work is amazing. This is a lost art. Canvas sails were made of hemp like clothing, ropes and the caulking used to fill in the spaces between the planks, among other things. Hemp is 3 times stronger than jute and was preferred because it was unaffected by salt water. The work done by the sailors was demanding and left no room for errors as their sails would be the ones that brought the fishermen home safely.

A very experienced & savvy art conservator recently told me that I should post process photos so that I can share the magic... I don't have process photos because I chipped away in between chaos and often set my phone down for extended periods of time when doing restoration work... At the very bottom of a huge tub full of heavy silver plate & knick knacks, under threat of being crushed with every move, emerges this fantastic early American coin silver toasting mug with hand chasing, just like a diamond falling from a box of coal... Made so far back that Tiffany & Gorham had not yet set the Sterling standard for US Silver, without the mark of a master silversmith who undoubtedly made this piece, we can only make attributions and wonder at all the stories this cup has to tell... It was common in the Victorian era to take earlier, simpler pieces of silver and have them reworked with hand chasing to reflect the style of the day.
