"Vitiligo is an acquired loss of pigment with full depigmentation of patches," explains board-certified dermatologist Michele Farber of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City. The disorder causes the skin to lose its natural color, which results in patches of lighter skin that can appear anywhere on the head or body (though they are most common on sun-exposed areas such as the face, upper chest, backs of the hands, arms, and feet). Before you head out in the ☀️ this weekend, apply SPF to those easily forgotten spots: Ears, lips and backs of hands. 👂🏼 Ears Skin cancers can occur on any part of the ear. Make sure to slather on the sunscreen to all parts of your ears. 👄 Lips Use a lip balm with SPF 30. The lower lip is about 12 times more likely to be affected than the top lip. 👐🏽 Backs of hands After you're done applying SPF to your body, make sure to rub it into backs of hands, too. Your hands are one of the first places to show photoaging. 👀 Eyelids Protect your eyelids by wearing sunglasses. Or use an eye cream that contains (SPF), a sunscreen stick with physical blockers, like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide
☀️ Skin Myth: Darker skin tones don't need SPF. ❗Having a darker skin tone does not fully protect you from the sun. Melanin provides an SPF anywhere from 1.5-4, so while skin of color can take longer to burn, it will still sunburn without any sun protection. SPF also only refers to UVB protection but UVA also damages skin. Make sure the sunscreen you use is broad spectrum and covers both UVA and UVB.
