#TransformationTuesday: The Eller Telepresence room at Barrow Neurological Institute has received a facelift—creating a more open atmosphere and modern look while also increasing seating capacity. The room made history when it opened in 2005 as one of the first #MedPresence video-conferencing units in the country. It enabled the live broadcast of surgical procedures from the operating room. Since then, #Telepresence has become an essential multi-use space for the Institute. While it is still used for producing and showing live surgery broadcasts, it also hosts resident rounds, press conferences, educational seminars, and team meetings. Over the past 15 years, however, the room had become dated. Learn about the transformation and see more photos here: https://bar.rw/3mSGipD

#ICYMI: This year, Barrow Neurological Institute became one of several sites from the Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS) to participate in the HEALEY ALS Platform Trial, an initiative led by the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital. A "platform trial" is a clinical trial in which multiple treatments are evaluated simultaneously. New treatments are added to the platform as they become available, thereby decreasing the gap in time from identification of an exciting therapy to testing. This model, already proven successful in the cancer field, will greatly accelerate therapy development of effective and breakthrough treatments for people with ALS by allowing investigators to test more drugs, increase patient access to trials, and reduce the cost by quickly and efficiently evaluating the effectiveness of multiple therapies. The HEALEY ALS Platform Trial is perpetual and will add clinical sites, participants, and experimental treatments until a cure for ALS is discovered. When most people think of #Parkinsonsdisease, they think of motor symptoms such as tremor and rigidity. Less attention is paid to non-motor symptoms, like anxiety and dementia, which can also have a significant impact on the quality of life of individuals with Parkinson's and their families. Dr. Fredric Manfredsson, an associate professor in the Department of #Neurobiology at Barrow, is working to better understand the basic science of non-motor symptoms. On Friday, Jan. 22 from noon to 1 p.m. (MST), Dr. Manfredsson will give a presentation on his laboratory research and discuss how he is leveraging the resources at the #MuhammadAliParkinsonCenter to hopefully bring new therapies to patients. #TakeoverTuesday: Hi, everyone! I'm Kristen Larson Keil, senior medical illustrator here at Barrow. I'll be taking over Barrow’s social media accounts on Tuesdays for the next few weeks to share some medical art and show what makes our #Neuroscience Publications department such a great place to be a #medicalillustrator. Today, I'm sharing a book cover I created for Dr. Robert Spetzler's award-winning Color Atlas of Brainstem Surgery. Part of my job is to oversee the artwork for large scale projects like textbooks. This one had over 1800 figures! I’m also including an illustration outlining surgical flaps that can be made from the lining in the nose to repair skull base defects. Most of our illustrations are created to accompany journal articles and presentations authored by Barrow physicians and researchers. I’ll be back next week with a little bit about the history of #medicalillustration at Barrow!
