Ready for a fun fact on this Friday? The modern home security system was first patented by Marie Van Brittan Brown, a 43-year-old Black woman who worked long hours as a nurse in Queens. Crime in her neighborhood was high, and she wanted to feel safe while her husband was away.
In 1966, she designed a closed-circuit security system that monitored visitors with a camera and projected their images onto a monitor. There was a series of three to four peepholes with cameras peeking through each, and a panic button that contacted the police. The system also included a set of two-way microphones that served as an intercom to people outside, and a remote control that locked or unlocked the door from a distance.
More than a dozen inventors have cited the Brown patent for their own technologies, and Brown was later honored with an award from the National Scientists Committee.
