About

Helping Change the Lives of At-risk Youth and Families.
Rawhide is a 501(c)(3) recognized charity, founded in 1965, by John and Jan Gillespie and Hall of Fame Quarterback Bart Starr and his wife Cherry. Rawhide has redirected the lives of thousands of youth that have either lived on our residential campus or received services through our numerous counseling clinics.
Today, Rawhide offers a full continuum of at-risk youth programs in Wisconsin, including intensive residential care for troubled young men. We also offer a spectrum of prevention-based programs for troubled boys, girls, adults and families. At Rawhide, you will find committed, caring and professional staff who are focused on achieving positive outcomes with every youth or adult we serve.
Why not put almost 50 years of successful experience to work for your child or family and learn first-hand what the Rawhide difference can produce in your life?

This month celebrates National Learning and Development, and we want to give a shout-out to our hardworking academic instructors at Starr Academy, our fully accredited school in New London. The 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that about 1 in 6 Wisconsin public high school students said they considered ending their life. According to a Prevent Suicide Wisconsin® report, 271 youth ages 10 to 19 years old died by suicide between 2013 and 2017. As Rawhide continues to welcome the most severely traumatized, abused, high-risk youth in Wisconsin, we hope you’ll take the time to follow our future posts throughout October as we focus on mental health and ways to help these younger generations through their struggles.

In June, Rawhide partnered with Young Life to help launch a spiritual wellness program on our New London campus. We hired Young Life’s Program Manager Jared Stanley, who has begun implementing the program. During the Q&A sessions with our youth, they discuss many topics from life to faith. One 12-year-old boy asked, “Do you think God still loves people even when He looks down here and sees people treating each other so badly?” It was such a deep question that stopped Jared in his tracks, but led to a healthy conversation about God’s awesome love for everyone. Moments like these show us that God continues working hard at Rawhide!
Favorite teachers leave a powerful and lasting impression on us. This World Teachers’ Day, we want to honor our educators at Starr Academy. These academic instructors teach our at-risk youth year-round why graduating is so important and how making healthy choices can help them succeed when they return to their communities.

Did you know adolescents are more likely to disclose suicidal intent to a friend or peer than adults? According to the Prevent Suicide Wisconsin® study, between 2013-2017, adolescents who died by suicide were more likely to have a reported family problem, school problem or both when compared with adults. Rawhide’s counseling centers around Wisconsin offer therapy to help at-risk youth overcome these suicidal thoughts stemming from childhood trauma.
Our youth are always involved in community service projects to help them learn about the importance of giving. We teach them how to be a successful adult by following these values: compassion, honesty, respect, integrity, safety and teamwork. How are you and your youth making a difference in your community on Make a Difference Day?

Did you know boys are two to three times more likely to be diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) than girls? But 4.2% of girls are also diagnosed with ADHD. October is ADHD Awareness Month, and because many of our youth at Rawhide struggle with this, we think it’s important to share the myths vs. facts. Learn more: https://bit.ly/36ZpOGQ
According to Prevent Suicide Wisconsin®, suicide was the second leading cause of death for 10 to 19 year olds between 2013 and 2017. From 2016 to 2017, females between 15 to 17 years old had the highest rates of emergency department visits and hospitalization stays from self-harm injuries. Many of the at-risk youth who come to Rawhide see our skilled therapists to help them overcome their suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, ADHD and more that stems from abuse, trauma or neglect from childhood.
Rawhide youth were proud volunteers at the Oshkosh Celebration of Lights where they helped set up holiday displays and scenes throughout Menominee Park. We hope you get a chance to drive through this giving season and see all their hard work! 🎄☃️🎁
Got hay? 🚜 If you have hay to share this winter, we could use your help at our New London and Shiocton facilities. Between the two locations, these 15 horses provide support to hundreds of youth and families in therapy as they overcome their struggles with behavioral and mental health issues. Our equine, who support therapy sessions daily, need good nourishment to do this hard work! Depending on size, each horse can eat about one bale of hay per day. 🐴🐴 If you’re able to donate, please reach out to Gretchen at gliethen@rawhide.org or (920) 531-2681. 🐎
Children are the seeds of our future. 🌱 They will one day become a full size tree, branching out as scientists, politicians, health care workers, educators and more. It is our job at Rawhide to make sure our at-risk youth have a chance to turn their faces toward the sun and along the path of success and happiness. ☀️😃
Homelessness happens. 🏠 In fact, it happened to 592 family households in Wisconsin last year, according to the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. 👨‍👩‍👦 While Rawhide may not be a homeless shelter, it is that safe place between hopelessness and a bright future for at-risk youth, so they don't become a statistic in the future. This Housing Day, we are reminded how important our mental health and educational services are to ensure our communities continue thriving. 🌞
This World Kindness Day and every day we teach youth compassion, empathy and kindness toward others through community service projects. What do you teach your children about the power of being kind?
This Veterans Day, we want to share how grateful we are to those who served our country. We want to give a special thank you to the veterans who work at Rawhide!
According to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA), one in four children lives with family members who are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. That equates to more than 18 million children affected by parental alcoholism every year. Many of our youth have experienced this back home, which has led them down the wrong path and over to Rawhide. This month, help us bring awareness to Children of Alcoholics Month. Being there for youth as a safe, healthy adult is crucial to their growth and healing.

Every job makes an impact on the world. Every month we will be highlighting one of our hardworking, equine-assisted therapy horses who walk alongside so many of our at-risk youth on the path to healing and growth. Meet Mystic! She’s a 16-year-old Connemara pony, who lives at our Fond du Lac location. She’s quite the show pony with her unique personality. She has a great smile and takes a bow on command, and loves a good roll in the dirt after a grooming session. Mystic is also the first to greet us for supper and is a good eater. One of her most memorable therapy sessions was with a youth who was working on letting go of excuses and speaking more of their truth. Mystic wore hoopla hoops around her neck, which signified the youth’s excuses during the session. Every time the youth had a moment of growth and started to let go of their excuses, Mystic shook off one hoola hoop at a time! She helped change this youth’s life by showing them they no longer need to be carried to survive.
