This is Taffy, a very sweet 6-year-old with a bad knee (cranial cruciate ligament rupture) and some hip pain. In lieu of surgery, her owners have elected to take a more holistic approach to manage her pain. Enter Dr. Ashley Barton, our board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist. Dr. Barton uses a mix of modalities to help Taffy, including, electroacupuncture, Tui-Na, cold laser, and chiropractic adjustments (pictured). As you can see she is pretty happy about her visits! Taffy's owners say they notice improvements every time she comes for treatment. She can rough house with the new puppy now without being constantly sore and her owners have even been able to take her off all pain medications. Taffy is a great example of how multiple modalities can be used together to get amazing results! Want to learn more about our pain management services? No one knows your pets better than you. You know what they like and dislike when it comes to food and treats, where they like to sleep, how they like to be scratched, and their favorite toys. Often times, you are the first one to notice when something is different about your furry friend’s health or behavior. Other people who interact with your pet such as groomers, dog walkers, and trainers may also notice changes that are important enough for you to schedule an appointment with your family veterinarian for further evaluation. When it comes to cancer, early detection can increase the chance of a better outcome. Here are some signs to pay attention to when interacting with the special animal in your life. Should you notice any of these, it’s important to contact your veterinarian for immediate follow up. #nationalpetcancerawarenessmonth

Spreading some 'pawsitivity' from our friend Ginsburg! 🐈 This cool kitty was not feeling so great when he first came to see us in our Mount Laurel location. He came through our Emergency Department after having been lost during a snowstorm and was missing for several days. Weighing only 2.4lbs and severely dehydrated, his owners knew something was not right. After some initial tests, Ginsburg was found to have a very low white blood cell count caused by a systemic infection. Drs. Brandon Denning and Dominika Okroj treated him with supportive care which included IV fluids, antibiotics, and appetite stimulants. With a little help from his owners, Ginsburg sent us a very touching letter with an update on his progress. He has already doubled his weight and is feeling great! Here's a small sample of what he had to say, "I owe all the happiness above to ALL of you at RBVH; if it were not for you, I would not be here to write this very thankful letter saving my life!" Thank you Ginsburg! We wish you continued health and happiness!
Please join us in congratulating our fearless leader, Austin O’Connell, for receiving a Kudos Award! Compassion-First Pet Hospitals hosts a network-wide employee recognition program called Kudos and, each month, employees are encouraged to nominate their peers who they feel exemplify the 5 core values: Kindness, Empowerment, Community, Collaboration, and Integrity. With over 3500 employees network-wide, many nominations were submitted, and Austin was chosen as the one who best exemplified Community! We’re proud to have a Hospital Director that has such a strong sense of community both in building a dedicated, compassionate team and in caring for people and animals near and far. 🎉Congratulations, Austin! 🎉 Compassion-First Pet Hospitals January 26 at 5:00 PM · This is a story you do not want to miss! Meet our ⭐️Compassion-First Kudos⭐️ recipient Austin O'Connell, the Hospital Director of Red Bank Veterinary Hospitals in Mount Laurel, NJ. Austin was nominated by his peers for exemplifying our core value of Community 🌎: "A truck driver recently stopped at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Mount Laurel with a stray cat he found at a Virginia truck stop. The driver was traveling to New Jersey, knew of the Red Bank Hospitals and figured we could do something to help. Austin had his staff treat the cat, while he took it upon himself to find the owner. The cat had a chip, which luckily included a phone number and a name. Austin continued to call the number with no response. When he searched for the owner on Facebook, he found a match and learned that the cat was named Smokey. The owner had lost Smokey right before moving to California for a new job. She had been heartbroken about losing Smokey and grateful that Austin had searched and found her on Facebook. Two days later, Austin coordinated getting Smokey on a plane and back to its owner at no cost to her in honor of the Christmas season. The owner was delighted and grateful for Austin and his staff." You can read the full tribute on our website: https://bit.ly/2Nc3iCv Kudos, Austin! 👏 #CFKudos #CompassionFirstPetHospitals

Our neurology technician, Heather, took Gunny in and is pleased to report he is doing great and eating like a champ!

Meet a member of our Emergency Department: Dr. Melanie Lang. Dr. Lang, a Pittsburgh native, had a career in management with Verizon Wireless prior to pursuing her dream of veterinary school. She received her VMD (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine) from the University of Pennsylvania, then completed a rotating internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospitals in Tinton Falls before joining the ER team here in Mount Laurel. She enjoys the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of emergency medicine, and approaches complicated cases as though they’re interesting problems to be solved. Most importantly, she loves being able to find creative solutions that meet the needs of both the pet and the client! She currently lives in Philadelphia with her immortal cat, Dr. Butterfat, and in her free time enjoys hiking, travel, sports, the gym, and drinking entirely too much good coffee.

Meet our featured surgery patient, Aylen! Aylen is a 9-month-old Golden Retriever that presented with a history of limping on both front legs. During an orthopedic evaluation by our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Fernandez, Aylen showed pain in her elbows, requiring a closer look using CT. The CT images showed a common issue with the medial compartment (inside part of the elbow joint) common in this breed. There was a small chip fracture that commonly occurs due to an abnormal pressure point, resulting in lameness. A 3D reconstruction and 3D printout was made to help inform Aylen's owners of the condition and treatment options. With this condition, dogs will eventually develop arthritis of the elbow, however there are surgical procedures to help with the limping short term. Aylen was taken to surgery to remove this chip fracture and also eliminate the pressure point of the elbow (this procedure is called a subtotal coronoidectomy). This surgery was performed minimally invasively (arthroscopy) by Dr. Fernandez, through the use of small cameras and tools. With a little help from physical rehabilitation, Aylen made a great recovery with the lameness resolved!

Happy St. Patty's Day! As we continue #PetPoisonPreventionMonth we wanted to share a fact about Shamrocks. Shamrocks are beautiful reminders of St. Patrick’s Day but they can be toxic to pets. Enjoy their beauty, but keep them out of reach from your pets. The good news is that these are not the tastiest of plants and your pets are unlikely to naturally consume more than a nibble – it’s best not to risk it. If your pet does consume Shamrocks – consult your veterinarian immediately to evaluate toxicity risks.
