Today’s spotlight is carbon, almost all modern vehicles fight carbon. With GDI (gasoline direct injection) technology comes greater power, greater fuel mileage, and more carbon buildup. Carbon buildup will rob your vehicle of the power and mileage gains of GDI technology. There are a few simple things we can do to reduce carbon buildup. First use the proper oils for your vehicle and don’t go over on the oil changes, second using ethanol free fuel helps as it produces less deposits, and third have a chemical intake cleaning done every 10-20k miles. The chemical intake cleaning will remove the gummy oil buildup before it becomes carbon. The only way to remove the carbon once it forms is to remove the intake and scrape it off or blast it with walnut shells. These pics are from a carbon removal job we recently did on Friday, you can see the gummy buildup that blocks the airflow and the dry hard carbon on other cylinders, also we included a pic of the valves after cleaning.
Today’s featured car is this beautiful 2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman, it is here today for its regular oil service and scheduled brake flush (due every 2 years 24k miles). Using the correct oil is important in all cars especially in European cars, oil is more than just synthetic vs traditional and the numbers on the front, it’s the additive package that makes or breaks an oil and it needs to meet your vehicles specs, mini for instance takes a BMW LL01 oil spec, so NOT all 5w30 synthetics will do. The long term effects of the wrong oil are engine damage and oil leaks and breakdowns. Some of the additives are elastomers and they keep the seals and gaskets working properly and the plastic timing guides from getting brittle. We have seen more than a half dozen European vehicles this year that had major failures from the wrong oil causing timing failure with an average repair cost of 3k-5k depending on vehicle. Today’s tech tip of the day is about car keys how to keep your car keys from breaking when attached your key ring we got this trick from a customer years ago and we’ve been doing it ever since. At the sporting good store pick yourself up some #5 or #7 split rings and some swivels, you will find these in the fishing section. Use the split ring to attach the swivel to the key, next attach the swivel to your keychain. This will allow your key to swivel and move independently of the keychain so you do not break your key as it attaches to the keychain. Feel free to share this tip with your friends and family as it will keep them from the frustrations of breaking your key off of your keychain and having a loose key all the time or having to get a new key made.
