Happy Memorial Day weekend!! Thanks for your service and sacrifice to all our active duty Military and Veterans!!! A BIG thank you to our Veteran and hygienist Mrs. Connie Howell!!!
WITH HALLOWEEN COMES a lot of sugary treats. In hopes of sparing our patients from any post-Halloween cavities, we want to go over some of the treats that are worst for our teeth and the ones that are actually not so bad. 😃
Hard, sour, and sticky candies are in the bad category. 🍭 It takes time for hard candy to dissolve, which means an extended sugar bath for the teeth. Sticky candy adheres to the teeth, which brings all that sugar directly to the harmful bacteria. Sour candy is acidic as well as sugary, making it doubly harmful.
So what’s the good news? Chocolate! It contains compounds that limit oral bacteria, slow tooth decay, and fight bad breath. However, the more sugar there is in it, the more it cancels out the good effects, which is why dentists prefer dark chocolate. 🍫
Finally, the best candy for teeth is candy sweetened with xylitol instead of sugar. There aren’t many xylitol candy options besides sugar-free gum in most candy bowls, but xylitol goes beyond depriving bacteria of food; it actually hurts it. Xylitol treats are definitely good ones to aim for. 👍 #healthysmile #halloween #halloweentreats
