Sickle-cell disease affects nearly 100 million people worldwide! With SCD, the red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a “sickle”. The sickle cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells. When they travel through small blood vessels, they get stuck and clog the blood flow which can cause serious pain and other health problems.
• Sickle-cell is an inherited disease of the hemoglobin in the red blood cells.
• Sickle-cell disease is inherited from both parents
• An estimated 2.5 million Americans have Sickle Cell Trait.
