Behind the wheel of a 25-ton truck, Republic drivers routinely face obstacles and one of their biggest challenges is avoiding distracted drivers. To avoid potential incidents, we piloted a safety program using beacons on our trucks to notify other drivers using the Waze traffic app that a slow-moving Republic vehicle was nearby. Over 130,000 notifications alerted drivers of a Republic truck location during last year's test run, which allowed those drivers to reroute and avoid our trucks entirely. Driver Justin J. has been described as an angel and a hero by a resident in Wilmington, Delaware who he saved from a house fire. On his route, Justin noticed a house on fire. The homeowner was in her back sunroom and had no idea. Justin slammed on his horn and didn’t let up until the homeowner ran to the front door. Realizing her garage was engulfed in flames, she quickly ran back into the house to grab her dog, and they both made it out safely. Justin called 911 and used his fire extinguisher to settle down the flames until firefighters rushed to the scene. More than that, he stayed with the homeowner to provide comfort until a friend arrived. “I want you to know how truly blessed I feel that you were there for me on that horrifying day," the homeowner said. "You will remain my hero!” Thanks Justin for being a Republic Services Rockstar!

We received a call from a distraught customer saying she had accidently thrown her wedding ring into the garbage. Driver Jason E. was notified that somewhere inside his compacted eight-ton load was a diamond ring valued at thousands of dollars, and more importantly, held sentimental value. Jason met the customer at our local transfer station where they both equipped themselves with PPE and secured the area. Jason began to narrow down the search by where in the load he thought that bag ended up. After spending nearly 45 minutes breaking apart bags, Jason found a bag with the ring nestled inside. In speaking with Jason afterward, he said, “I was determined to find that ring for her. I knew how much it meant to her and I didn’t want to let her down.” Thank you, Jason, for being Relentless in the care of your customers.

Empty, clean and dry. These are the three magic words of recycling. Every item in your recycling bin should be free of liquid and food residue (think ketchup bottles). When items are soiled, they can contaminate other perfectly good recyclables (think paper), and those contaminated materials will end up in the landfill. Give your recyclable containers a rinse, then tap out the excess water, leaving no more than a teaspoon. #RecyclingSimplified

Congratulations to Charlie P. who recently retired after over 42 years of dedicated service as a driver in Corvallis, Oregon. Charlie began his career in the trash industry in 1978, after leaving the timber industry. Throughout his career, Charlie has worked in every line of business, driving every type of truck. He’s known as a “jack of all trades” with the ability to figure out the operation of any equipment and is always willing to help where needed. From all of us at Republic Services, we’d like to congratulate Charlie on his well-deserved retirement!
If recycling had a best friend, it would be precycling. Precycling is about reducing your impact on what goes into the waste stream by purchasing and using items that are unpackaged, reusable or recycled. It has also been referred to as a low-waste lifestyle. Precycling or adopting a low-waste lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight. It takes intention and practice. Here are some baby steps to get you started: https://bit.ly/3aAMePO

Our local sales team in Memphis, TN recently welcomed General Manager Gretchen L. with a toy roll-off truck for her grandson. It looks like the gift is a big hit with this little happy hauler.
They say all unwanted items end up at the landfill, but that wasn’t the case for a lost puppy spotted wondering around El Centro Landfill. Fortunately, employees Taylor V. and Desirae M. were able to rescue the stray dog and they quickly turned to social media to reach out to the community. The very next day the puppy was reunited with his happy owner, who had been missing the puppy for a month! Way to go, Taylor and Desirae – you are heroes!

Should I? Shouldn’t I? If you’re asking yourself these questions as you toss something in your recycling bin, you might be an aspirational recycler. This happens when you aren’t quite sure if something is recyclable or not, yet you still place that item in your recycling container, hoping that somewhere down the line it will be recycled or reused. For little Connor, trash collection day is the most exciting morning of the week. Without fail, Connor excitedly waits for his favorite Driver Tom S. Sr. to make the turn and come down his street. Over the course of the past year, Connor and Tom have built a special relationship. Tom recently gave Connor a Republic Services die-cast metal front-loader truck, and in return, he received a hand-made thank you card. “These stories really touch our heart,” said Operations Manager James B. – and we couldn’t agree more!

A family in Melrose Park, Illinois got a special birthday surprise from Republic Services. The birthday boy and his little brother were elated when one of our trucks stopped by their house with Republic hats and a toy truck. “The customer connected with us because their 4-year-old loves garbage trucks. For his birthday, they asked if we could stop by their house. We decided instead to throw a mini-birthday parade. The drivers were very happy to be part of this – they love their communities, customers, and make it their job to know how many kids to keep an eye out for on each block,” said General Manager Joe S. Thank you to Joe, Scott, Jasper and Sal for teaming up to bring joy to this little boy on his big day!
There will be times when you just aren’t sure if something should be recycled or not. It’s best to toss the item in the waste bin when that happens. For example, a pizza box is made of cardboard, but if grease and cheese are stuck to the box, it can’t be recycled. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3tkOvWb
