A number of factors are at play but one is the power of a good name that speaks to the core job people want to get done. “Zoom” is so much more appealing to me than “LogMeIn” because it conveys action and progress while LogMeIn conveys tedious meeting minutia. In their attempt to drive innovation and growth, most companies are asking the wrong questions.
Asking “How can we generate more ideas?” and “How can we quickly and inexpensively test those ideas?” leads to high failure rates. These questions cause companies to waste a lot of time testing and developing a lot of bad ideas. Why do that? In truth, any idea that does not address an important unsatisfied need is a bad idea.
Instead, ask “How can we identify the important unsatisfied needs in our target market?” and “How can we address those needs better?” Only important unsatisfied needs are worthy of pursuit. Knowing where to focus your creativity turns innovation and growth into a repeatable business process.
Yes, testing ideas is an essential part of innovation but only after you have determined where the important unsatisfied needs lie.
