Angel is a 15yr Spaniel mix. At 14yrs she began to have clinical signs of arthritis, beyond her slowing down over recent years.
After trying more than one medication and joint supplement for osteoarthritis; there wasn't the difference her caretakers were looking for. So a newer condroprotectant was offered that works with the immune system and is in the form of a chewable treat. It reduces inflammation and helps preserve joint cartilage. Angel's caretakers said she gained 5 yrs, and walks and plays as she did years ago [with her squeaky toy].

Pets rely on humans to protect them from parasite-borne pathogens, and protecting pets also protects people from disease. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends year-round heartworm preventives and annual testing, as well as regular use of medication to prevent flea infestations.
Dogs and cats should get heartworm preventives year-round, according to the American Heartworm Society, and many heartworm medications also protect pets from other parasites. Anyone who has put off their pet's annual checkup should schedule one now.
Livestock vaccine maker Medgene Labs is developing a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine for pet cats and ferrets, and possibly for farmed mink. Studies have shown that all three species are susceptible to the virus, and while it's possible people can transmit the virus to pet cats, studies have not confirmed cats can transmit it to people.
Mosquitoes, fleas and ticks are active year-round, and autumn is "high time for deer ticks," which can cause Lyme disease in unprotected pets, writes Traci Howerton with Animal Rescue New Orleans. Pets' seasonal allergies can also worsen in the fall, and snakes in search of cozy hibernation spots can strike curious pets, Howerton warns.

Study Explores How Pets Respond to SARS-CoV-2...
SARS-CoV-2 did not replicate in the upper respiratory tracts of dogs exposed to the virus, and the dogs did not show signs of illness or shed the virus, but cats did develop contagious infections, researchers reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Cats do not appear to be highly susceptible to the novel coronavirus in real-world conditions, and they don't appear capable of passing the virus on to people, but they might be able to infect wildlife, says study leader and veterinarian Angela Bosco-Lauth.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council in July reported continued increases in the presence of hookworms, with the highest monthly increases in canine or feline hookworm infections in Augusta-Richmond County, Ga., followed by Sioux Falls, S.D., and San Francisco, Calif. "This demonstrates how vital it is for dogs and cats to be protected against hookworm parasites with broad-spectrum, year-round preventatives and, at a minimum, biannual testing," said veterinarian Craig Prior, a CAPC board member. "By protecting your pet, you are protecting other pets, your family, other families and your entire community."

About 70% to 80% of pets older than 3 years have some level of dental disease, and certain breeds of dog and cat are especially prone to dental problems, says veterinarian RuthAnn Lobos. Dental problems are both painful and dangerous, and Dr. Lobos says people should brush their pets' teeth daily and can supplement oral health with dental chews, and a veterinarian should perform regular dental exams.
Short-coated pets can quickly develop frostbite and become hypothermic in cold weather, but even pets that live outdoors and are acclimated to the cold should be protected from extreme cold, says veterinarian Beth Labriola. Pets that live outdoors need insulated shelter, extra food and liquid water, and owners should be alert for signs of hypothermia such as shivering, curling into a tight ball and unresponsiveness.
More than half the dogs in the US are overweight or obese, but pet owners should know that lean dogs live longer than heavy dogs, writes veterinarian Stephen Sheldon. Sudden weight loss should be investigated by a veterinarian, but keeping dogs lean prevents or delays the onset arthritis, cancer, diabetes, organ failure and other age-related degenerative diseases.
Anchorage, Alaska, veterinarian Sara Lavery says canine infectious tracheobronchitis is "running rampant" in the area, and she's never seen a more extensive outbreak. A variety of viruses and bacteria can cause respiratory infections in dogs, and dogs should be kept away from other dogs and places where dogs congregate until the outbreak subsides, Dr. Lavery and veterinarian Jon Basler say.
