To my great surprise, received a link to the online neighborhood #TheNewFillmore about a calendar that another staff person, Corey Weiner, and I created, with Katheryn Allen Katz acting as photographer, at #RhodaGoldmanPlaza . We design one annually for our residents but during these "sheltering in place days", we were unable to feature residents this year. Instead, we based the calendar on the popular #BouquetstoArt fundraiser held annually at the #DeYoungMuseum. But rather than having a week to create a work, we had 1-2 hours. The Persimmon shown was sculpted styrofoam covered with rose petals over which I pinned daisies. For the #TomKillion piece, I tied the orange thistles to the branches with raffia. The original artwork is from the beautiful collection we have hung on the walls of our 7-story RGP building. NEWFILLMORE.COM Bouquets to art: the local edition
Given the burden of all that we have had to bear these past few months, here is a delightful, positive "coming together" that all started with a chair . . . a fish chair! It is heartwarming and engenders the feeling of hope that all of us need now. Enjoy! WASHINGTONPOST.COM A tattoo, a peculiar chair in Baltimore and the zany power of the Internet
I don't think anyone who lives and works at #RhodaGoldmanPlaza will ever forget our "day on Mars" yesterday. It created unease among us, and wouldn't you know, occurred on the very first day of outside haircuts in the Fern Court. We brought in lights so the stylist could see, which made it look like we were making a movie all day long. This photo was taken at 10:30 am yesterday outside the front door looking at #HamiltonPark. Glad to be back on planet Earth today!
Tuesday, September 2 from 5:30 - 6:30, Candiece Milford, our very own Managing Director of Marketing, will be interviewing Chip Conley. Candiece is on the Board of #AtHomeWithGrowingOlder, a non-profit that helps people reconfigure their homes to help them age in place in your home, safely and with joy. We'll be discussing "Intentional Reinvention" - what it is, how we do it, and particularly during this COVID era, how it has forced itself upon us with surprising creativity. Please join us!
We're so proud of our very own Corey Weiner whose painting was selected for exhibit at The de Young Open, an online celebration of the museum’s 125th anniversary. Over 11,000 works were submitted by 6,190 artists - 763 artists were chosen. Kudos to our talented painter. Who knew she is not only a culinary wizard but an extraordinary painter! SFSENIORBEAT.COM She had to choose between two loves, but one came back and now showing off at the de Young Museum - San Francisco Senior Beat:
If you haven't discovered the wealth of information on the #techenhancelife website, this is the time to connect. The article below is not only incredibly useful, with live links if you want a deeper dive into the subject, but the comments by readers also give tips and recommendations and well worth reading. You can register for free and discover a very rich and deep well of information to help us as we age . . . all "mined" from discussion groups of older adults, so we know it's real and good information. Happy Veteran's Day from our very own veteran Carl, K. We thank you for your service. Note the patriotically-colored rubber bands in his distinctive beard! That beard is seasonal, BTW. Be on the lookout for future decorations.
Despite all the restrictions, sometimes you just can't contain the joy and fun that still "burbles" at #RhodaGoldmanPlaza. Residents and staff alike joined in some Halloween fun through costuming, special programming and treats.
Here's our Carl again, this time checking out a new putting green on the Terrace. The minute it was put out, he had the iron in hand and went at it! Between raindrops, it appears this will motivate a few ex-golfers to try it out, not to mention how pleasant it is just to "hang out" with other residents and schmooze.
As we come into the holidays and solicitations for donations will proliferate, #Techenhanced just published this thorough and important article about #ScamsandOlderAdultsWhattoDo? It is "must read" to understand why older adults are being targeted and what to do about scams. This is the best article I've read about the subject and is very readable. You might also want to check out the www.techenhancedlife.com website as it is wealth of information about products and services for us as we age, content coming from discussion groups by older adults themselves. It is a purely research site, no advertising. TECHENHANCEDLIFE.COM Home
Just in time for the Holidays, another comprehensive article from Tech Enhanced Life about how to choose the best "senior friendly" tablet for yourself or you parent(s). There's so many products out there, it's hard to navigate. This article is takes the pain out of the decision - enjoy! TECHENHANCEDLIFE.COM Best "Senior Tablet": How to Choose
We created this video during Thanksgiving, but the gratitude is timeless and certainly appropriate during the Holidays. Emma Davis, our Director of Programming and MFT, introduces this short video. Enjoy! YOUTUBE.COM Thanksgiving Video
Our very own, Katheryn Allen-Katz, is a talented photographer whose show could not be shared publicly until now. Click on the photo below to enjoy a lovely black and white collection of local images from landscape to abstract. Happy Holi-daze to everyone! A note of appreciation for the spectacular New Year's Dinner that Dining Services delivered on two trays for each resident! "We had such a good time spreading our fancy placemats on the table, arranging our silverware and various sides of soup, salad, bread, dessert and drinks, and then getting to the heart of the matter -- those gold-rimmed china plates with their delicious main course. Both of us think that was the best steak we've eaten since we moved in, over a year ago, tender, tasty, fat-free, yummy. (Be sure to keep track of that butcher!) A. especially liked the mashed potatoes and J. preferred the spinach. As to the dessert, we both liked the fruit, but only A. got a piece of chocolate cake. J., alas, had to settle for her whole bag of chocolate candy as her final dessert. All in all, this was such a thoughtful meal, it made the evening very special for us and, we're sure, for the other residents of RGP."
Covid vaccine day arrived and a team of 8 descended with PPE, computers, the vaccine in insulated, cooled packs, epi-pens galore in case of a reaction, and nurses and med techs to vaccinate almost 300 people in 6 hours. What a Cecile B. DeMille production it was. Afterwards we stayed for observation for 15 minutes for just to be sure no one had a reaction. One down, one to go February 17th!
Finally, some rain in the forecast and what better time than to pull out a puzzle to do with your favorite friend?! This is Mia, our Program Director's dog who is trying to be helpful.
In today's SF Chronicle, our youngest resident captured the headlines! Check out this well-written article. The one thing the writer didn't include is his dream of being able to take a trip to Hawaii sometime this year. Remember what Goethe said: "Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." You go, Carl!
Another special Valentine's Day dinner created by our chef and food and beverage director, carefully and lovingly delivered to each resident. It never photographs as well as it tastes, but residents loved the extra effort to make them all feel special. This year we also had an outpouring of people in the neighborhood and volunteers from a bank deliver hundreds of handmade Valentines so everyone would receive one. Talk about the community coming together - this one truly showed the high regard the surrounding community has for our work and empathy for people as we age.
Our very own Corey Weiner, Fine art painter as well as being our Director of Food and Beverage is speaking at Ruth's Table on Thursday, March 4th at 4:00 pm. It's the first of a two part series about mid-career artistic transitions and breaking ones own barriers. Sounds fascinating. Our first outing in a . . . YEAR! And on a spectacularly clear, warm day at Crissy Field/Fort Mason. What a joyous occasion this was and we are all eager to get "oot and a-boot" again (as they say in Canada!) Feels good to be alive, feel the wind and some semblance of freedom.
