Our office will be closed tomorrow, August 4, due to inclement weather.
We want to update our patients on the status of the office. Effective immediately Governor Northam issued an Order of Public Health Emergency No. 2 , which has mandated that all dental offices close to all services except true dental emergencies (things that are or may become detrimental to one’s health). This order is currently in effect until April 24, 2020. This date is subject to change.
What is considered a dental emergency?
The American Dental Association has provided this guidance to dentists:
Dental Emergency: Dental emergencies are potentially life threatening and require immediate treatment to stop ongoing tissue bleeding, alleviate severe pain or infection, and include: Uncontrolled bleeding , Cellulitis or diffuse soft tissue bacterial infection with intra-oral or extra-oral swelling that potentially compromise the patient’s airway, Trauma involving facial bones (potentially compromising the patient’s airway)
If you have a dental concern or issue you believe is a emergency please call our office. Please do not go to urgent care centers or the emergency room for dental problems.
All scheduled appointments from now until April 24, 2020 are canceled. We will call patients to reschedule once we have a firm date we will be open.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Attention patients of Dr. Richard Cottrell & Associates,
At this time we would like to notify everyone that our office will be closed until March 31st (this date is subject to change) due to the risk of COVID-19 exposure. The Virginia Dental Association (VDA) has been closely monitoring the spread of the coronavirus and has recommended that dental offices in the state of Virginia postpone all non- emergency care starting March 17th. To protect the health and safety of our patients and staff we will follow through with this recommendation.
If you are experiencing a dental emergency we will have a doctor on call for this two week time period. We will have staff in our office from 8am -2pm daily to answer calls, after 2pm we will have an answering service answering calls and reporting messages to our doctor on call. Please call (540)775-7671 if you are experiencing a dental emergency.
At this time we would like to thank our patient’s for their understanding during this difficult time and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. For more information on how coronavirus COVID-19 is impacting dental offices in the state of Virginia please visit the VDA website at https://www.vadental.org/news-details/2020/03/15/vda-issues-recommendation-for-dentists.

Marketing ads spend so much time encouraging patients to brush their teeth more that you might be surprised to learn that it’s possible to brush your teeth too much. It’s certainly possible to brush them too hard. We call this overbrushing, and it can lead to enamel erosion and gum recession. If you are noticing problems with your gums or increased sensitivity, feel free to call our office for the best solution to resolve your issues.
