April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month
The Oral Cancer Foundation estimates that approximately 53,000 people or 132 people each day will be diagnosed in 2019 with oral cancer. If detected early, the survival rate is 80-90%. Unfortunately, many oral cancer are found at later stages making the 5-year survival rate 43%.
Previously, alcohol and tobacco were the primary risk factors for oral cancer. Today, the human papillomavirus (HPV) is linked to about 70% of oropharyngeal cancers; although the combination of tobacco, alcohol and HPV is thought to play a role in development. Just one more reason to see your dentist on a regular basis and smile!
What a nice way to start the week!
