One important facet of the military’s presence in the town occurred from 1982 to 1989. During these years, Stealth Fighter Planes trained secretly during the night at the Tonopah Test Range. Sam goes on an adventure to discover more about the military significance of this town by interviewing the President of the Central Nevada Museum. On this episode, Sam visits two significant refuges in Nevada. The Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is an essential stopover for waterfowl and songbirds as they migrate along the Pacific Flyway in the Spring and Fall. In the Paiute language, Pahranagat means "Valley of Shining Water", which is a fitting name for this wetland mecca situated in the Mojave and Great Basin Desert. She then visits the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge, an important location for the endangered Moapa Dace fish. Sam dives deep into how this refuge increased the population of this endemic fish and the importance of banding songbirds with diminishing populations.
