The Federal Reserve made an emergency interest rate cut today (March 3) by half a percentage point in an attempt to contain the economic fallout from the coronavirus, otherwise known as COVID-19.
“The coronavirus poses evolving risks to economic activity,” the Fed said in a statement. This is the first emergency rate cut in more than a decade. Mortgage rates have already had a steady decline. This additional bump will likely lead to a decline in rates for some programs, including HELOCs and consumer financing products. Transversely, the Fed rate tends to also dictate the rates that banks pay for many savings products like CDs, which means you may also see lower returns on these products.
