I was the first Hispanic my roommate in college had ever met. He was the first person I'd ever met who had never met a Hispanic. Culture shock for both of us. We broke bread and gained a mutual appreciation for each other.
Angelo, a black coworker who grew up in Cleveland, had never had chicken paprikash. Dori immediately made some and brought it to work for all of us to share.
The pig roasts my dad had every year were basically a mini International Festival. All of our neighbors brought food over from a multitude of cultures. I was spoiled like that.
I forget sometimes how much of this country is not like Lorain. How many people have never broken bread at a different table. And the older you get, the harder it is to admit you're culturally sheltered.
I've always had an open invitation to Lorain, but now more than ever, let's break bread. If you grew up in an area, or currently live in an area, where it's not racially, culturally, or economically diverse, please come visit. Let's get out of our comfort zones. I know some of you have never gone to eat in an impoverished area, and some of you have never been to eat in an affluent area. Some of you are afraid to try anything you can't put ketchup on, and some of you are afraid to try anything not made with Adobo. Let's start expanding our horizons and getting out of our comfort zones.
Go to any of the restaurants I post about, tell them I sent you. Let them know this is your first time trying it. They'll be more than happy to give you a proper introduction. And they'll be honored you took the chance on connecting and strengthening the bond of community. Full bellies, full hearts. We are the ambassadors of change
