When you have the chance to describe a friend, family member, or other loved one, it's probably very easy for you to highlight the many wonderful qualities that make them so special. Yet so many of us find it difficult to do the same when speaking or thinking about ourselves. This week, we'd like to challenge you to practice positive self-talk. What's one kind thing you can say about yourself? Feel free to write it down, share it here in the comments, or just hold it close in your heart.
The companionship that a pet offers is a great way to reduce anxiety and stress. A pet can be a great source of comfort, companionship and motivation for their owners. In many ways, pets can help us to live mentally healthier lives. Pets are also a great motivator for people. Dogs especially are great at encouraging owners to get exercise and can be beneficial for for those suffering from depression. Pets can also have calming effects on their owner. Just by sitting next to or playing with a pet can give owners a chance to relax and calm their minds. Caring for a pet also gives your day purpose and reward, and a sense of achievement. It helps you feel valuable and needed. Studies have shown that: - Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets. - Playing with a dog or cat can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax. - Pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets. One in four people will struggle with mental health at some point in their lives. With the coronavirus pandemic and troubled economy, many are in crisis right now. More than ever, people need a companionship from a pet to help boost their morale, optimism and self worth. Rio Vista Behavioral Health will always be here for you and your loved ones. Call us at 915-209-4513 press 1 for admissions or visit our website at riovistabehavioral.com.
Everyone who is healing from a mental health disorder or recovering from addiction is on a unique journey. But no one is alone as they walk this path. As you look back on the progress you've made, it's important to recognize those who have offered support and provided guidance along the way. To promote a mindset of gratitude, we welcome you to tag someone in the comments and tell us why you're grateful for them.
Daylight savings time during the fall and winter months can increase seasonal depression. During these months, when the days are shorter, our body clock may become disrupted due to a lack of exposure to sunlight. This can lead to the symptoms we know as seasonal depression. Seasonal depression includes symptoms such as: - Feeling sad or depressed - Losing interest in things previously enjoyed - Eating more, especially carbohydrates - Sleeping too much - Lacking energy or feeling tired - Feeling either restless or slowed down - Feeling guilty or worthless - Having problems with making decisions or concentrating - Thinking about death or suicide Here are some tips for reducing your risk for seasonal depression: 1. Begin treatment early. 2. Get out and walk in the morning sunlight while practicing safe social distancing. 3. Ask for help if you need it from friends or a loved one. Rio Vista Behavioral Health is always here for you and your loved ones during your time of need. Please call us at 915-209-4513 press 1 for admissions or visit our website at riovistabehavioral.com.

The CDC recommends counting to 20 when you wash your hands, which is approximately how long it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. But as fun as that song is to sing when cake is involved, it can lose its charm if you sing it several times a day. To acknowledge National Handwashing Awareness Week, which began on December 6, our staff shared the song they like to sing or hum while they’re washing their hands. Watch this video and comment with your favorite handwashing song! Fred F., Behavioral Health Associate at Rio Vista Behavioral Health, “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. 🎶

Although his education and training are in the realm of business administration and accounting, he has served in the behavioral health field since 2018. His formal work experience began in 1994 in public accounting where after two years, he chose to focus on one industry. After serving in financial leadership roles in the world of retail, manufacturing, education, and healthcare; he found his true calling. Thus, as of 2009, he has gained crucial experience in dealing with the nuances relating to healthcare finance as well as becoming a good steward in managing resources efficiently and effectively which in turn has enabled those who are in the front lines to provide top quality patient care. “Behavioral health is very important to me as I was fortunate enough to have had access to it as a young adult and despite the common misconceived notions about these types of services, anyone who is willing to do the work can also become a person who is happy, stable, financially solvent, and a viable member of society.”

I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and have been working in the Healthcare industry for thirty years. I started as a boiler technician at a Med-Surge facility here in El Paso and was promoted to Facilities Manager after 5 years overseeing multiple Medical, Diagnostic and Oncology clinics. After 15 years I moved on to work as a Plant Operations Director in Las Cruces overseeing 2 Rehabilitation and LTAC facilities, then returned to El Paso and started working in a Behavioral Health facility for 8 years. I now work for Rio Vista Behavioral Health and have been Plant Operations Director for 2 years. I am very proud to be part of the Rio Vista team! I work with very passionate staff and caregivers who are committed to helping our patients and community. I am also very passionate about helping our patients and doing as much as possible to help them in their recovery. Pete Najera

Andrea Amaro’s quest to achieve a Guinness World Record continues through the month of February. She has completed 8 runs of her goal of 15 and even though she has experienced flare-ups due to Lupus throughout her journey, nonetheless, she is not giving up and her strides have more meaning at every run. Andrea is very appreciative of all those supporting her journey and taking time out of their busy days. Her quest to raise awareness to Mental Health and raise funds for NAMI a non-profit organization remains a priority.
We continue our series of “Meet our Staff” with Jerry Vela, Director of Dietary Services. Our gratitude is extended to you and your staff in focusing on our patients nutrition and well-being through balanced meal planning. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas I started my career in the Food Service industry 32 years ago, interestingly enough, at a place named Rio Vista. I started as a dietary aide and quickly moved my way up to assistant manager. After a few years, an opportunity came up to become a Director of Food and Nutrition at a new hospital being built. Needless to say I jumped at the chance to start a new and unique approach to “hospital food”. The hospital was to have 5 star accommodations to include the food. This is where I learned the importance of a good plate of food and the important role a good meal can play in a patient’s wellbeing and overall happiness. One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. After 20 plus years at this facility another door opened and opened my eyes for the need of quality mental health care in El Paso. Ironically enough its name is Rio Vista. Here at Rio I’ve seen the importance of teamwork, communication, and come to appreciate all the hard work and dedication everyone puts in to make sure our patients get THE BEST CARE in the southwest by far!! I started my career at Rio Vista and I hope to someday finish my career at Rio Vista Behavioral Health. -Jerry Vela
Safety and the care of our patients starts with us! Caring for our community and our loved ones is our core value. Rio Vista Behavioral Health encourages the community to join us in the fight to stop the spread of Covid and schedule your appointment to get vaccinated.
If these shorter days have you feeling exhausted and tense, you might be struggling with more than just the winter blues. The truth is that about 2% of the population struggles with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Start by learning about the signs and symptoms of SAD: http://ow.ly/P5Gr102zvx1
Our facility above all continues to put the safety of our employees and our community first. Rio Vista Behavioral Health prepares to open its doors for our first round of Covid-19 employee vaccines.
We continue our series of “Meet our Staff” with Joseph De La Riva, Director of Utilization Management. Joseph and his team work endlessly in aiding and optimizing plan of care for our patients. Thank you for all you do! I’ve been working within the mental health field in many different capacities and at many different organizations. It is in my nature to help those who are less fortunate, suffering from illnesses that cannot be seen. In my various roles, I have seen at the “ground level” the significant impact untreated mental illness can cause in individuals and their families. It is important to recognize the significance that behavioral health plays in our day to day lives. Equally important is to recognize what services we can provide to those who are suffering with mental health concerns. Roles such as case management, therapy, psychiatry, and utilization management. It is my privilege to have joined the Rio Vista family in 2019. At Rio Vista, we ensure quality of care that is unmatched. Patient safety is our number one priority. We serve, advocate, and support El Paso and surrounding communities. We serve those who are most in need and give them hope, inspiration and a blueprint for recovery. It is my honor to work with this team. I look forward to serving together with this great team for many more years to come. -Joseph De La Riva

February might be a short month, but it can feel so much longer. If you've been feeling depressed, you're not the only one. Here's why February is the gloomiest month: http://ow.ly/jGMh102zu8e
Researchers have reported that seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects about 10 million people in the United States. SAD symptoms are most common in the fall and winter. Experts have identified colder weather, lack of sunlight, and a sense of isolation as potential risk factors for SAD. In addition to taking all necessary measures to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe from COVID-19, it's important to also be aware of the signs and symptoms of SAD. http://ow.ly/4kcG102zu8O

We continue our series of “Meet our Staff” with Terri Terrazas, Director of Health Information Management. The efficiency and accuracy of your team is a reassurance that our patients information is handled adequately. We apreciate you and your team, thank you for all you do! Hello, my name is Terri Terrazas and I am the Director of Health Information Management here at Rio Vista Behavioral Health. I have been in this position since the hospital opened its doors in Feb. 2019. I was born and raised here in El Paso and when I was growing up I was not sure what career path was of my interest, somehow, the Medical Records field found me. I was hired as a file-clerk for one of the hospitals here in El Paso and that is where I found my “AHA” moment. An opportunity to learn everything there is to know about medical records was offered to me and eventually it lead me to get a degree in health information and I was able to move into a supervisory position. After 25 years, I am still doing what I enjoy. Working here at Rio Vista Behavioral Health has been one of the best times of my life. As soon as you walk in the door, everyone is greeting you with a smile, beginning with the receptionist, housekeeping and all the way up to the CEO. The Leadership team here at Rio Vista has been one of the best teams I have had to work with. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and reading romance novels. My ultimate goal is to retire from Rio Vista Behavioral Health and to do as much traveling as possible. -Terri Terrazas
