Informative meeting about Aviagen. Ruth Sapp Burton February 6 at 3:15 PM · As we can see when driving on the bypass, construction on Aviagen’s $35.3 million bio-secure poultry feed mill processing plant in Pikeville is making good progress. At this stage, the company is now ready to talk with local farmers about supplying as much locally grown corn as possible. Aviagen is hosting an informational webinar Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. CST for interested farmers. They’ve been working with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the U.T. Extension Service on the project. You’re invited to participate if you’re a farmer interested in selling to Aviagen or if you’re an industry representative. The company prefers to set up supply agreements with farmers for corn grown as close to the feed mill as possible, but because of their year-round production, they are willing to work with farmers within a reasonable distance of the operation. Specifically, they mentioned farmers within a 50-, 75-, and 100-mile radius of Pikeville. They’re also looking for farmers using irrigation for predictable production and with on-farm storage capacity. This is the same type of supply agreement they use at their Athens, Alabama, feed mill that local leaders visited when first talking with the company about locating in Pikeville. If you’d like to participate, you can call Mayor Gregg Ridley or J.C. Rains at the local Extension office about how to access the meeting online. Your Commissioners also have this information. But if farmers don’t have the resources to attend online, they can attend in person at the Pikeville Municipal Building. Aviagen and state officials will participate virtually. IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND IN PERSON, please contact Mr. Rains at the Extension office so plans can be made for social distancing. (NOTE: I don’t have any information on when applications will be taken for jobs at the new plant, but I will pass it on as soon as I hear.) MORE FROM THE COMPANY: “Aviagen supplies day-old grandparent and parent stock chicks to customers in more than 100 countries worldwide under the Arbor Acres, Indian River, and Ross brand names. These brands are among the most recognized and respected names in the industry and each has a proven record of success in addition to a large and loyal global customer base. In August 2020, Aviagen broke ground on a new state-of-the-art feed processing facility in Pikeville, Tennessee. The new facility will supply the company’s growing number of internal flocks with high-quality, pathogen-free feed. “The $35.3 million allocated to the feed mill is part of a larger $100 million investment for the company in Pikeville and Crossville in southeastern Tennessee. With the capacity to produce 2,400 tons per week (125,000 tons annually), the feed mill will supply more than 18 Aviagen pedigree and 46 Grandparent farms, as well as additional future operations.”
