Susie King Taylor, teacher and nurse, was born into slavery in Georgia in 1848. During the Civil War, she and other African Americans sought safety behind Union lines on the South Carolina Sea Islands. She attached herself to the first black regiment in the U.S. Army, the First South Carolina Volunteers, where she worked as the regimental laundress and taught former slaves how to read. Some sources describe her as the first African American army nurse. She moved to Boston in 1872 and devoted much of the rest of her life to work with the Woman’s Relief Corps, a national organization for Civil War veterans. Dr. Charles Richard Drew, an African American surgeon, has been called “the father of the blood bank,” since he organized America's first large-scale blood bank during the early years of World War II. He also trained a generation of black physicians at Howard University. In 1940, Drew directed an effort by New York hospitals to collect blood and plasma for British casualties. He developed uniform standards for collecting and processing blood plasma at the hospitals. Afterward, he helped pilot a national blood banking system. His innovations included mobile blood donation stations, later called "bloodmobiles." Ironically, when the blood bank effort expanded, before America entered the war, the armed forces initially kept African Americans from donating blood. The policy quickly shifted, so that Blacks could donate, but use of the blood products was segregated. Throughout the war, Drew criticized these policies as unscientific and insulting.
