Is a History of Periodontal Disease Still Considered a Risk Factor for Dental Implants Even with Frequent Maintenance Visits?
A recent article in The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants (Cho-Ying, et al, Vol 35, #1, 2020) concludes that the answer is yes!
- Poor compliance and poor plaque control are major concerns.
-The natural dentition can act as a plaque reservoir!
-Residual pocket depths and bleeding on probing often indicate an early stage of the disease.
-Plaque control should be the major goal of maintenance visits.
My conclusion: Treat Periodontal Disease first. Then keep treating it! It's a chronic disease (like diabetes) requiring chronic care.
Remember "Success with Periodontal Therapy is largely dependant on long term, uninterrupted care."
