About Robert E. Atkinson M.D.
Robert E. Atkinson M.D., is a board-certified hand and upper extremity orthopedic surgeon with his own private practice, which has two locations in Honolulu and Waipahu, Hawaii.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Atkinson attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was an All-American in swimming. He went on to obtain his Doctor of Medicine from Thomas Jefferson Medical College, and complete a one-year surgical internship at Yale University Medical Center. After finishing a four-year orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, Dr. Atkinson did a fellowship in hand surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Since then, Dr. Atkinson has built a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable orthopedic hand surgeons in the field. He has presented papers at meetings for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, Eastern Orthopedic Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and several hospitals and colleges. He has regularly been named to the Top Doctors list for Hawaii and was placed in the top 1% of hand surgeons by U.S. News and World Report.
Presently, Dr. Atkinson is the former Chief of the University of Hawaii Orthopedic Residency Training Program. He has volunteered at the Shriners Hospital and has participated in Health Volunteers Overseas programs. Dr. Atkinson’s practice emphasizes the treatment of hand and upper extremity conditions, including nerve injuries, joint replacement, and arthroscopic surgery.
