Rugs are hung in the drying room to dry overnight. Heated air exchange and fans will dry all the rugs in the room in a matter of hours. Final drying temperatures reach 138 degrees fahrenheit killing any bacteria that might remain in the rug. Fragile rugs that can not be hung are placed on flat screens in the drying room.
Cleaning agents are distributed and worked into the carpet to begin the removal of soil.

In addition to pressurized water various hand tools can be used to dislodge soil. In this image a specialized 'tamping' brush and bone folder are being used to dislodge encrusted soil. Nylon screen mesh is sewn over fragile areas to protect them during the cleaning process. Small areas of ‘dye bleed’ will be removed by a chemical process.

Rugs are carefully ‘finished’ after cleaning. Power brushes are used to groom the surface of the rug. A technician carefully monitors the results of cleaning to determine if further treatment, or a full re-cleaning, is needed.
Navajo rugs often have unstable dyes. Synthetic dyes became common in Navajo weaving in the late 1800's. Often not properly 'fixed', these dyes can become soluble in cleaning. In this image a stream of red/black dye runs from the dark yarns of the weaving. Navajo rug weavers often over-dyed dark variegated brown yarn with synthetic black dyes to achieve a darker and more even color. Skilled wash procedures prevent these 'loose' dyes from staining the textile. We are also able to remove dyes that have migrated and stained other areas causing 'color run' or 'dye bleed'.
Except for some of the worst types of spots and stains, our cleaning charges are all-inclusive.

Over the years my Mom or I have tried them all. They can also identify where and usually when your rug was made and the approximate value. Flat-woven rugs such as kelims or Navajo rugs can get ‘fuzzy’ in use, much the same way wool sweaters develop ‘pills’. Excess surface fiber can obscure the sharpness of the design on a flatwoven rug. Cat ‘scratches’ can also mar the surface of both flat-woven and pile carpets. Fine bladed clippers can be used to ‘shear’ the surface of a rug to remove excess fiber. In this image, a modern Navajo rug is being sheared to remove excess surface fiber.

If you repair rugs is sort of impossible to have too much wool. It can be inconvenient to store, it can be a hassle to source, but having what you need -when you need it - is a real luxury.
