With Minnesota’s frigid winters leading to a colder water supply, your water heater will be working extra hard to keep up over the next few months. There’s also the risk of frozen pipes in exterior walls, especially during heavy winds and extremely low temps. Here are a few ways you can help prevent issues this season:
• Keep the water heater’s temperature setting somewhere between 115 and 120 degrees for optimal safety and efficiency.
• On severely cold nights, leave faucets open just enough to trickle so the water is moving and less susceptible to freezing.
• Open cabinet and closet doors in the kitchen, laundry room, and bathrooms so warm air can reach the plumbing.
• Set the thermostat no lower than 55 degrees (or closer to 60 during extremely low temps), especially if the home will be empty for multiple days.
While decreasing the temperature at night or before leaving home for a few days can helps save money, remember that the lower you set the thermostat, the higher the risk of pipes freezing. If you notice decreased water pressure or drains that are slow, clogged, or giving off strange odors, you may be experiencing a frozen pipe. But don’t worry, the master plumbers at Robillard Plumbing are here to help!
