Well....apparently this Peacock hit Maggie in the face one too many times. Once a Pelican has had enough, the only recourse is to rid the offender of that darn tail. He was going to shed it anyway, Maggie just sped the process up. You have to appreciate someone taking matters into their own hands (or wings in this case) to solve their own problems. 🤣

I want to thank everyone that took the time to donate to RWRC for the Day of Giving last week. The fundraiser was a great success raising $36,013.00. Your continued support and generosity are what make what we do possible. It's truly heartwarming and humbling to know that so many of you care about our mission. Again, thank you all, and we'll get on with the business of saving lives and giving second chances. ❤

It seems today is a 'share your things with a friend' kinda day. The baby Pelican takes immediate advantage of Maggie's generosity. (Maggie is on the far end looking very nonchalant)

The Pelicans were gifted this week with a new chaise lounge. Some days Maggie will share with the baby Pelican, and some days not so much. There is always a discussion, and Maggie always wins. It's good to be Queen. ❤

As you all know, we like to give everyone a buddy when they are a baby. Unfortunately, at this time of the year, buddies are few and far between. We did get in a baby pigeon yesterday that was actually much younger than Inca, but also much larger. It's hard to imagine just how petite Inca Doves are untill you see them next to someone else. Inca is a good 10 days older than the pigeon. I need to explain the video. It's not the savage attack it appears to be. That is how pigeons and doves beg their parents for food. That flap around like maniacs and poke at their mom's mouth. These two had each thought they had hit paydirt. We do hand feed them until they are able to pick up enough seed on their own to maintain their body weight. These two cannot house together for obvious reasons, but they are next to each other in their critter keepers.

Just when you think it's over.....in comes this precious baby Inca Dove. She is the cutest thing ever, and the soft little whistle begging for food absolutely melts your heart. ❤️

Whenever you're needing a smile, just watch Maggie enjoying one of her simple pleasures. She likes nothing more than flushing her pouch out with the hose. If simple pleasures are the keys to a happy life, she's got this one nailed. ❤️

This precious baby was rescued from a very hellacious situation. It's always a challenge to keep chicks happy when they are a single. We have a chick t-shirt with a big pocket in front that they can ride around in while we work, and we spend any time we can with them. Getting creative is just part of the daily activities.

I stepped out the back door and was immediately greeted by the Queen. She was not in the best of moods as she was hangry. I had to laugh which didn't help things at all. All I could think was that her 'hair' looked like some sort of sea anemone. Her hair is usually on fleek even in the strongest of winds. Perhaps a morning Herring will calm Miss Maggie down. 🤣

As Henry David Thoreau said, 'The Bluebird carries the sky on his back.' Without a doubt, one of the most spectacular little birds alive is the Bluebird. Our guy that came in with a back and eye injury is ready to go. He really wanted to take a juicy waxwom with him. He decided they are quite the tasty treat. So, a final worm for the road, or the sky in his case. Holding one of these special souls in my hand is always an honor and privilege. Fly free my little blue friend. ❤️
We received this beautiful Blue Bird last Saturday. He had apparently hit a window and had a back injury and a weepy eye. Although he looked a little rough, he immediately took water and about 30 tasty waxwoms. He is on track with his recovery. I have every expectation that he'll fully recover and be released. It's all because some kind ladies cared enough to make the long drive and bring him to us. ❤️

When I do educational programs at schools, it's always funny to see which of my birds is in a good mood and who would rather be at home in his nest box with Sadie. Forrest was not amused with the Harry Potter decorations at all. Ozzie, on the other hand, had his usual stage presence in full swing. That Vulture loves showing off more than anything. It truly gives people a whole different perspective on Vultures and how wonderful and unique they really are. ♥️

Every day I hear several of the many Wrens we have released singing up a storm. They love to sit in our massive columbine vine on one of the porches. Watching them sneak through the tightly woven vines searching for just the right bug and then taking a break to belt out a tune is heart lifting. With all the other noises around, it's refreshing to hear their song just rise above it all. I was going through a few pictures and found these of only one nest of Wrens that was brought to us last spring. The comparison between the tiny babies, which are very hard to raise, and the adults is staggering. Their joyful song is something I look forward to each day. They are rewarded with a feeder of mealworms. ❤️

I have to remind myself that every one of our many critters carry on with their lives every day. Each has their own pattern and activity schedule. When I take a moment to just stop and look around, I'm usually quite entertained by what I see. These two goof balls were tucked back in a corner of the courtyard enjoying a most glorious sunny spot, when Maggie suddenly stood up, warmed up and broke into song. I had no idea Pelicans could make up their own lyrics. After the show it was back to sun bathing. Apparently, the baby Pelican was not impressed.
