This morning's rain may feel like a relief after days of dry and smokey air, however the combination of rain and ash have some damaging effects on automotive paint. Essentially, when the ash mixes with water it creates corrosive chemicals, primarily potassium hydroxide and calcium carbonate which have similar corrosive properties as drain cleaner. The best way to prevent paint damage is to wash and completely dry your car daily. After the fire conditions are over be sure to do a deep cleaning to prevent the potential for future damage.
