It is estimated that one person dies from cardiovascular disease every 37 seconds in America and 17.9 million people die globally every year. This number is greater than that of deaths from HIV, malaria, and cancer. Therefore, the advancements to diagnose and treat these conditions are critical. Thanks to my amazing sister and the incredibly helpful staff at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, I was able to vote today with an emergency absentee ballot. Kristin served as my authorized voting representative and brought the ballot to me in the hospital and then delivered it to the county election office here in my neighborhood. Yes, I’m in the hospital and have been here since Sunday morning, but I’m doing much better now and will be getting released tomorrow morning!

Today, which would be Elizabeth Blackwell, MD's 200th birthday, we celebrate National Women Physician's Day. Dr. Blackwell was the first women to receive a medical degree in the United States and founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children. She and her sister, also a physician, helped train nurses during the Civil War. Today we honor Dr. Blackwell and the millions of women who have worked and continue to work toward advancing the science and art of medicine. #womendocsinspire #nwpd

The risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase and the combination of colder temperatures, and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, like lifting a heavy shovel full of snow.
