A look back in time: This photo (circa 1911) shows the newly built Powell School, located on top of the hill facing Powell Road at what is now Grace Drive. Students from 1st through 12th grade were educated at this “Monument on the Hill.” Powell High School graduated classes there from 1912 until 1953, when the new Olentangy High School opened. Powell School then became an elementary school for students through the 8th grade.
After Liberty Union School opened in 1963, Powell School held classes just through 5th grade, and finally before closing in 1973, the school served only kindergarten through 3rd grade. Sadly, the building was torn down in 1977. For more local history information visit powellhistory.org.
